Basic Take on the Celtics Offseason

With so much flying around and the draft likely marking the start of the major off season moves around the NBA I cant help but think the Cs keep it simple. Stay under the tax and hopefully put an over all better product on the court for next seasons playoff push without doing anything overly drastic.


I imagine the the Cs look to do the following.

1. Upgrade the 5th starter aka Hauser.

2. Add a playoff capable big to backup / be the 1B to Queta.


Without a deeply nuanced understanding of the current CBA I dumb it down to the fact that Spotrac has the Cs 21.2 million under the 1st apron. Assuming the Cs want to get the second year under the apron that's the $$ they have to work with. Subtract from that the roughly 3 mill for the #27 pick that leaves 18mill.

Now if Hauser is moved the his 10million gives the Cs room for a 28mill player.

My guess is the Cs go the budget route again at big man. Maybe draft big at #27 (Zuby Ejifor?), hope for development out of Amari, and sign a vet min (??) to round out the rotation with Queta and Garza.

Options to upgrade the 5th starter:

Cam Johnson 23 million, do the nuggets just do a Hauser for Cam swap to save money and help them sign Watson?

Bobby Portis 15 million, post Giannis I would assume Portis could be had for relatively cheap

Santi Aldama 17 million, maybe the Grizz after drafting Boozer or Wilson the Grizz will look to move on from the 25yr old PF?

PJ Washington 19.8 million, a guy I thought they would try to land last off-season maybe they look to move him this off-season? 

Brad Beal FA, this is an interesting one. Tatum childhood friend/mentor. Coming off of his hip injury is he ever going to be healthy? He is only 32

Grayson Allen 18 million, prior to getting injured he was having his best season at age 29, if attainable for Hauser + #40? He would be a good value.

If the Cs have roughly 28 million to work with could we see an off-season where Portis is traded for (15mill) and Beal is signed (6 mill)?

This matches my calculation with salaries based on Sportrac.  Depending on what BOS does, it is likely they will end up hard capped at the first apron (using the full MLE or using a TPE from last season).  Adhering to the tax line is optional.  I feel there is a lot they can do without going over the tax line, and it is likely that they stay under it.

So if you go with the idea that they will have only $13M'ish to spend, most of the bigger deals would require selling off Hauser's contract, getting them to more like $23M to spend but with another roster spot to fill.

Beal is an interesting potential target.  He has not played more than 60 games since 2018-19.  I have not given him much thought.

As an FYI, Beal has a player option of $5.6 million next year.  It is hard to imagine him exceeding that number next year, and thus hard to imagine him declining the option unless he just hates LA.  (Which is also unlikely).

Not happening and we should not want it to.  He is unlikely to even be able to pass a physical on July 1.  He is a minimum-salary player at best at this point.  The Clippers would do a small dance of joy if he declined his option.

For impacting winning I like the Cam Johnson idea the most. I?m dubious Portis or Aldama will really help all that much. Getting Beal on the cheap if his health checks out could be interesting.
