So he has a top 9 list

1 - Jordan
2 - Magic
3 - Kobe
4 - Steph
5 - West
6 - Isiah Thomas
7 - Oscar
8 - Wade
9 - SGA

So SGA has made the top 10, 9th All-Time, after back to back MVPs and a Championship.

SGA still below Wade. Wade no MVPs but he does have 1 Championship as the main man and 2 as a sidekick. Wade has more physical power driving and leaping ability to finish in traffic. SGA can be stifled a bit more. Forced into the midrange more than Wade as a result. As San Antonio are doing now.

The Oscar one is curious. Why is Zeke ahead of Oscar? Why is West ahead of Oscar? That is at least debatable although West has always said Oscar was the better player of the two of them. Certainly the better player earlier in their careers. I thought it was close in the middle of their careers. Then advantage West in late stage career.

I am not sure about Kobe being ahead of Oscar or West. West believed Kobe was better than him also. I am not sure. West was so efficient and more of a team player. I'd rather have West. I'd rather have Oscar too.

Any other contenders that were overlooked? First glance it looks like they are the right top 9. Not thinking of anyone who was overlooked.

I am tempted by Walt Frazier as my 10th guard.

Isaiah seems high.

No Stockton or Nash.

A lot of people seem to overrate Kobe.  And I agree the order is a bit off, but I think they probably are the top 9.  Stockton and Drexler you could make a solid argument for.  Nash has the 2 MVP but his lack of defense and post season success holds him back some.  Frazier, Monroe, Tiny, Payton, Paul, Kidd, Pistol Pete, Dumars, etc. are the next tier down.

Point guards or shooting guards? If just guards, CP3 isn't listed? Not even Nash or Kidd get any considerations?

I have a hard time doing these lists without separating the two.  Not sure which side I'd put SGA but I lean toward shooting guard.

Agreed.  It's dumb but, then again, so is Nick Wright.

And who does a top 9 list?? Are we not a base-10 society? This is why I should be president.

Wright is playing mind games with us all...there must be a #0 so it goes 0-9  ;)

Or Cousy, he won an MVP, 6 titles.  Are Isiah Thomas and Wade really ahead of him?

This type of list is pretty subjective.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Guards is such a weird way to categorize this since some SGs are also SFs (or wings). I always think people rate Kobe too high. I'd probably put Steph above him. Bump Oscar up a couple of spots. Remove Wade and add Stockton. I know he doesn't have the accolades, but by far all-time leader in assists and steals. Just seems like he should get a spot.
