Jaylen refutes reports he is unhappy, wants to play 10 more years in Boston

In news that will disappoint his (many) haters and relieve his (few) supporters on this forum, Jaylen has strongly refuted the McGrady news that he is unhappy in Boston.

Doubtless his rebuttal will do little to quench the speculation around his future as we will be talking about it all summer

I wasn't sure which of the many Jaylen threads to put it in so I created a new one. I'm sure the mods will merge it with an existing thread if they see fit 

So...true or false? Is Jaylen lying and genuinely wants to play in Boston but just, perpetually, misunderstood? Or was he whining to T-Mac and T-Mac said something he wasn't supposed to, but he really is unhappy?

Is there a logical reason for him to lie? I think cynicism can live only so long in a brain that doesn?t wallow in conspiracy.  I am really glad, and not terribly surprised, to see Jaylen come out with this strong statement of commitment to the Celtics. I see JB as an intensely dedicated worker and an emotional guy who sometimes acts with some measure of impulsivity. Nothing he said previously would belie this statement about Brad and his feelings for the Cs. The conjecture that he?s been angling for a trade has no basis.  A person, even one generally happy in their situation, has moments of frustration and I think that?s all there was to JBs recent statements. It may be true that he places himself higher than he is as a player but he certainly has never rested on that notion. He?s worked his butt off every season and every offseason.  Celtics fans are lucky to have this future hall of famer on the Cs for all these years, and I hope he and Tatum are here for many more.

Jaylen strikes me as a whiny person. I imagine he was complaining about something to T-Mac or some intermediary who knows the two of them and T-Mac thought it was more serious than it was.

I expect Jaylen is happy in Boston overall. Just not everything and some of those other things he complains about.

Brown also doubled down on his previous comments that the 2025-26 season ? despite coming to an end in the first round ? was his ?favorite? season so far in his NBA career.

Considering that Brown and the Celtics won a title in 2024, Brown?s comments drew some criticism ? especially given Boston?s early exit and the optics of the Celtics playing most of the season without Jayson Tatum as he recovered from a ruptured Achilles tendon.

But Brown said that the main reason why he held this past season in such high regard was because of the growth of Boston?s full roster.

?I mean, we blew a 3-1 lead, and yeah ? we lost in the first round. We didn?t win a championship. But the amount of growth, the expectations that these same [critics] have for us, is why this was my favorite year, because I got to see it in practice. ? The expectations were for this team was to fail. The expectations was the team [would] be nothing, just to give in to and to quit. And this team did the exact opposite. We fought every single day. We fought for everything.

?I got to see Jayson Tatum come back from an injury, mentally overcome what [it] takes ? this is a part of the reason why this was my favorite year. You got to see all of these guys, all of my teammates, grow. I got to see them overcome adversity as a group, up close and personal. And even though we didn?t accomplish what we accomplished, no excuse.

? I?m not making no excuses. Obviously, the result ? we?re not satisfied with the result. . ?  But to fight and maneuver through adversity and grow and galvanize with a bunch of guys and have that mindset and approach, this was my favorite year. I wouldn?t say by far. By far would be a stretch, because obviously, winning the championship is great, but I?m telling y?all, this was my favorite season.?

I'm guessing it will annoy some people that he's not putting winning a championship as the main (only) reason for enjoying the game...he's talking about growth of his teammates, their ability to fight back against adversity, to overcome being written off...I guess in corporate speak he's talking about achieving the soft targets, not the hard targets. That's all fuzzy wuzzy HR stuff.

Unfortunately for him, fans are transactional...we don't know these players personally and could care less about their personal growth. We just care about championships, because that's the only reason we watch this team...we don't care about Luka Garza's personal growth, or Hugo carving out a role for himself as a rookie, or how Baylor developed a comfort level to take 3s more confidently. We just care about rings and they are just a means to an end of getting those rings, and when the team wins a championship it makes us feel like those hours of watching them weren't a waste of time. Soon as these players start missing shots we could give a crap about their personal growth. Am I right or am I right?

There?s a third and highly obvious and relevant option isn?t there?

And regarding this being his favorite season, it surprises me only that he says it, not that it?s true.  A championship is more an event - it?s only *championship season* in retrospect. I can see someone struggling personally and physically through a championship season and reflecting that they loved winning the championship but that the season overall was individually rough compared to other years.

You sure about that?  The same Jaylen Brown who caused all sorts of drama about being left off the Olympics?  The one who got fined a couple days ago for calling out NBA refs writ large, and pretty much said fine me some more in the same breath that he just denied being unhappy in Boston?  Jaylen Brown is many things, but he is not someone who holds his tongue when upset.

Does he have complaints that he has told the Celtics about?  Probably.  Can you have complaints about your job or coworkers without wanting to leave said job or get new coworkers?  I would imagine most people on this forum would say they have had that experience.

I call BS!  He's also come out in reports that he'd like to play for ATL some time.  I've been in the JKJB camp for ever, cheered when they drafted him, but now might be the time. 

ATL gets Brown
MIL gets Johnson
BOS gets Giannis

Fill in with whatever else is needed.

I think Giannis plays the 4 and moves JT back to the 3.  Want to go "small", Giannis goes to 5 and JT goes to 4.

Simply damage control by Brown.

If he is traded it won't be because of the comments. It will be because it is time to go in a different direction or he does not want the extension or Boston does not want to give that extension.

T Mac got his information from Brown or his camp...not like he made it up or Brad was the one sharing it.

I'd like to see Brown moved if they get a good enough deal. I also do not want to pay this guy $70 million a season on an extension.

Proclaiming yourself the best 2 way player in the NBA means you get it done in the playoffs. He simply did not do that this series with Philly or last year. I do not care about the comments he makes. I care about his play on the court when it is the most important time of the year. He usually does not perform well in the playoffs other than the year they won the title.

Maybe less twitch and more reflection on his own game and what he needs to do when it matters the most.

We'll never know how he really feels, but I'm glad that Jaylen at least is saying the right things here.

I also don't think the problem was ever that he wasn't happy in Boston or with the organization, it's more that he potentially isn't happy in his role with Tatum back as the #1. If the team could trade Tatum for guys like Sengun and Amen Thompson, or Markkanen, Bailey, and Peterson (but not Giannis), he might feel more secure in his role than he does now.

It's possible for someone to think he is under-appreciated, particularly for the effort he put in during the championship run, and the sacrifices he made for the good of being a contender ...

... while also being happy with where he is at and wanting to finish his career there.

I am not sure it is possible to tell what Brown really wants, he may not even know.  He is smart enough not to say out loud that he wants to be traded so he can be a #1; that would make it seem like he doesn't value winning.  I also believe that he is loyal and does like being a Celtic.

And I have said all along, that at this point, I don't believe BOS is looking to trade Brown, but I think they would for the right deal.  Brown has created enough chatter, I believe on purpose, so that teams will now be calling BOS and asking what is up.  Maybe even MIL will call.  This is not going away unless Stevens comes out and says we are absolutely not trading Brown no matter what, which he won't, as this would be silly, even Luka Doncic got traded.

Yeah, he posted this graphic on his Instagram back in February. He didn't say anything outrageous, but he was certainly proud that he was leading this team to a similar record to last year despite losing so much talent:

I don't think I've ever seen a Boston sports star get less love from his own fanbase than JB.  David Price, maybe.  But Price meant less to the Red Sox than JB has to the Celtics - and was certainly around for much less time.
