2026 Red Sox/MLB Season Thread

Oops they did it again!  Sox just beat the top team in the American League, Tampa Bay, for their 10th win in a row....and to make it even sweeter they won the game  10-0.  Chad magic!

Gotta admit that I did not see this coming at all with this team.

In the last 30 days, Yoshida and Durbin are hitting the stitches off the ball.  That probably won't last.  The Red Sox had 2 bunt singles in their big inning.  Everything won't continue to go right for them but if they can continue with solid pitching and average hitting, they will make the playoffs.  And with the pitching rotation they could potentially have in the playoffs, who knows.

Let's see what they can do at the deadline.  They should be able to pick up a veteran bat without overpaying or sending out anything useful.

Ha - looking back, I had a comment on June 10th in this thread where I praised Breslow for his Contreras, Suraez, and Gray moves. And for not signing any of the underwhelming overpriced guys on the FA market this past offseason. It was weird that we were so bad when we basically added good players to an existing playoff team.

I did not see the Harrison/Hamilton for Durbin/Monasterio/Seigler turning into a good trade, but here we are. And the Sox are paying Durbin essentially nothing for the next few years instead of Bregman $35M/yr with a no-trade clause for the next 5 years. And then you have the Perales for Jake Bennett, who is absolutely tearing it up.

Amazing they are doing all of this essentially without all of their best players from last year in Crochet, Anthony, Story. And to a lesser extent Bello and Duran who have fallen off a cliff. Maybe it's not sustainable with our young try-hards, but they sure have made the season exciting, which is all you can ask for.

It started before the all star break, and ended after game 1 yesterday. The night game was his first game back (and the go-ahead homer was his first AB back)

His 7 game suspension was reduced to 5 games which he served and was able to return for the 2nd game of the double header yesterday.

That's 3 in a row against the top team in the AL, Tampa Bay. Also, 12th win in a row...longest streak since 2006.  How about these Sox!!!!

On the verge of sweeping the 3 best teams in the AL in NYY, CHW, and TBR. Hoping they can cap it off today for another impressive 4-gamer. Either way, they've put themselves firmly back in the mix and the people in Boston/New England are just in a better mood now. Really impressive stuff

After 3 months of the season (78 games), the Sox were sitting at 32-46 and coming off losing a series to the Rockies.  That was June 24.  Now, less than a month and 19 games later, they are 49-48 and a game up for the last wildcard spot.  I have never seen anything like it.  Essentially wipe out 3 months of bad baseball with less than a month of good baseball.  And that is with the a lot of injuries:

Crochet
Early
Oviedo
Suarez
Bello (not injured but in the minors)

That staff could be one of the best in the Majors.  And that does not include longer term injuries to Houck, Crawford, Sandoval (back for the tail end of the run).  Then add in the injured position players:

Anthony
Story
Kiner-Falefa
Mayer
Casas (maybe a lost cause at this point)

The game today feels like a big game, even though it really isn't.  Fenway will be rocking on a beautiful day in Boston.  It is more of a statement game, a potential exclamation point of sorts.  But there are a lot of games left (65).  A streak like this should have them way out in front but because they were so bad, it only gets them kind of back to square 1.  65 games to see what kind of team this really is.

Decided to look into the Durbin - Bregman comparison, pretty incredible.

Despite earning a small fraction of Bregman's $35 million annual salary, Durbin has an annual salary of $796,000, he has outpaced Bregman in bWAR (2.4 to 2.3) and defensive Outs Above Average (+4 to +1) so far this season. Durbin is providing incredible value at a fraction of the cost compared to Bregman. 

Since this is a Celtics forum, I thought I would find the Celtics player most similar to Durbin.  How about Payton Pritchard.  Durbin is under Sox control for the next 5 years.....
