If Ben Simmons & his career had not petered out so suddenly, then the 2016 draft could have been an interesting top 3.
Ben Simmons
Brandon Ingram
Jaylen Brown
One of the very few draft classes in the past 30 years in which the top-three were all All-Stars.
Yeah, I am curious if there is any correlation with the fact that the first three picks were all historic, big market teams (76ers, Lakers & Celtics).
The funny thing is you ended up with the same exact order the following year which resulted in a bust, a lackluster, injury filled career, and a stud.
-Fultz
-Ball
-Tatum
The fact that the Celtics hit on both of these is incredible.
the really funny thing is that in both of those drafts, they were considered a 'top 2" quality and the C's were on the outside looking in with #3 and hit for the best player in each of those drafts AND that came after their top 2 rivals in the league each had a pick ahead of them. Makes me feel warm all over just relishing that.
Yeah, as I recall, Simmons/Ingram were seen as appreciably better than the next tier of six prospects. Those six (Dunn, Murray, Hield, Brown, Bender, Chriss) were the second tier, and draft experts had them all about equal. Brown certainly wasn't a sure thing, with the thought being that he couldn't shoot.
As I recall Tatum's draft, Fultz was seen as the only future superstar. Tatum was seen as the #3/#4 guy, having perhaps a slight edge over Josh Jackson.
Ainge killed those selections. His only flaw was in the trade down with Philly; he should have just taken the Lakers pick instead of protecting it outside of #2 - #5. But, betting against Sacramento is usually pretty safe.
