The Globe reported that we're interested in Gafford. They mentioned that we wouldn't have to trade away as much as we would for Zubac, but we would have to make the salaries work. OK salary cap experts, let's see some hypothetical trades!
Gaffords and Thompson for Simons works.
No it does not. Those two make a combined $31 million, not counting Klay?s trade bonus, and we cannot take on more salary because we are over 1st apron.
It worked on Fanspo trade machine so I thought it was OK. I think how it worked was that one or the other comes in via Porzingis TPE so that trade itself does not count as adding salary.
Got it. It is still a no-go because it adds a ton of tax to the Celtics this year, and takes next year's team to about $4 million short of the second-apron.
Those are reasons that BOS might not do the trade but that doesn't necessarily make it a no-go. And if that was the sticking point, BOS could add Tillman or Boucher to the deal and maybe a second rounder with protections. I am not necessarily advocating for this trade, just responding to a post that asked for some workable ideas.
I don't see Gafford as all that great of a get. Nor do I really like Thompson all that much at this point in his career. But trading an undersized bench guard for a decent bench big and a veteran bench wing shooter, is potentially a worthwhile swap that could help some this season but more importantly, bring in a couple of useful players for 2026-27 and beyond.
