Dumbest take of the week:
alen recently stirred the pot yet again during an appearance on the "Joe and Jada" podcast.
In the episode, the former Indiana Pacers star shared his intriguing perspective on why predominantly Black mainstream leagues such as the NBA and NFL are governed by strict salary caps, while white-led sports operate without that same ceiling.
"The only sports that have salary caps are black-led. First off, that's basketball and football," Jalen said. "Those are the only sports with salary caps. Baseball, golf, NASCAR, tennis, you can keep naming. They do not have a salary. That's the first thing. It's correct."
"The second thing is they have no after high school restriction. And so that's a residue of slavery. It's because we're going to get money off of you for multiple years for free," he added.
Baseball is the only major team sport in the US that doesn't have a cap. The NHL and MLS both have caps.
Now, there's a kernel of truth here, in that management in all sports is going to want to keep as much money for themselves as possible. Perhaps ironically, the major team sport where that is most true is probably MLB, with the six year arbitration rules. But, employers not paying employees as much as they could has been a thing as long as there has been civilization, and isn't a racial thing.
