Quote
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. ? Wake Forest Athletics announced today that Steve Weinman, a seasoned NBA front office executive with over a decade of experience in data strategy, scouting and performance analysis, has been appointed as Senior Associate Athletics Director for Analytics. In this role, Weinman will also serve as General Manager for both the men's and women's basketball programs, providing direct strategic and operational support for Coach Steve Forbes and Coach Megan Gebbia.

Weinman comes to Wake Forest's staff following a distinguished 13-year tenure with the Chicago Bulls, most recently serving as Vice President of Basketball Strategy and Analytics and Assistant General Manager.

In his role as GM of Wake Forest's basketball programs, Weinman will collaborate closely with the head coaches of each program on roster construction including recruiting strategy, transfer portal evaluation, resource allocation and planning. He will also work directly with basketball student-athlete agent representatives.

As part of Wake Forest's forward-thinking vision for athletics analytics, Weinman will serve as an Executive Affiliate with the Wake Forest School of Business, building and managing a formal partnership with the shared goal of developing a sports analytics concentration within the Master's in Business Analytics (MSBA) program. This collaboration?an unprecedented integration of academic and athletics leadership?will include hands-on learning opportunities for MSBA students through embedded projects within Athletics, enhanced alumni engagement and industry-facing programming.
Under Dean Annette L. Ranft's leadership, the School of Business has made major investments in analytics curriculum, experiential learning and high-performance computing infrastructure?resources that will now directly support Wake Forest student-athletes and athletic programs.

While this formal partnership represents a first-of-its-kind initiative in higher education?a bold integration of sport performance and academic rigor that amplifies both institutional priorities and competitive success?it also builds on Wake Forest's longstanding tradition of student engagement in Athletics. A prime example is the Student Analytics Team within Demon Deacons Baseball, led by Director of Baseball Analytics Chris Lewis ('22, MS '24), which has provided invaluable experiential learning opportunities for undergraduates and graduate students alike.

Weinman will also be responsible for the creation and execution of a comprehensive vision for a new Wake Forest Athletics' analytics and business intelligence vertical to support all 18 Wake Forest athletics programs, operations and revenue units. This centralized data infrastructure will provide an important efficiency advantage for all head coaches and unit leaders at Wake Forest by leveraging resources and talent across campus for modeling, reporting, decision-making, and performance strategy.

During his tenure with the Bulls, Weinman led the organization's basketball analytics department, delivering data-driven insights to support scouting, drafting, trade analysis and game preparation. He also served as the Bulls' internal authority on the salary cap and collective bargaining agreement, advising on long-range roster planning and market trends. Prior to that, Weinman worked at the NBA League Office in New York, where he provided advanced analytics and statistical modeling for both the NBA and the then-D-League (now G League). He is a 2010 graduate of the University of Missouri.

His arrival aligns with Wake Forest University's strategic priorities around innovation, data and student-centered experiences, and reinforces the University's continued investment in high-performance athletics and academic integration.

What They're Saying

Basketball General Manager, Sr. Associate Athletics Director for Analytics, Steve Weinman:
"From the moment I began consulting with Wake Forest this spring, it has been a joy to work with two basketball coaching staffs who have been so welcoming to me and open-minded in how they think about the game, both in terms of roster construction and game strategy. I'm extremely appreciative of both staffs, Dean Annette Ranft and Vice President & Director of Athletics John Currie and the athletics administration for offering the chance to solve puzzles together in support of putting our student-athletes in the best position to succeed."

President Susan R. Wente:
"This partnership between Athletics and the School of Business reflects Wake Forest's deep commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation. By bringing together the expertise of a seasoned NBA executive with the academic strength of our business and analytics programs, we are creating new pathways for student engagement, competitive excellence and national leadership in the future of college athletics."
Dean of the Wake Forest University School of Business, Annette L. Ranft:
"This first-of-its-kind partnership with Athletics adds a distinctive sports analytics concentration to our Master of Science in Business Analytics program, giving students unmatched hands-on experience connecting data with performance?while driving success for our athletic programs and the broader Wake Forest community."

Vice President & Director of Athletics John Currie:
"Steve brings to Wake Forest a powerful blend of NBA experience, strategic insight, and a collaborative spirit. His work will not only help drive competitive excellence for all our programs, with a large focus on basketball, but will also help establish a first-of-its-kind partnership between Athletics and our world-class School of Business. I'm especially grateful to Dean Annette Ranft for her leadership and vision in embracing this collaboration, which positions Wake Forest as a national model for integrating academic innovation and athletic performance in the rapidly evolving landscape of college sports."

Head Men's Basketball Coach, Steve Forbes:
"Steve comes highly recommended by Billy Donovan and Brian Hagen; two people I trust and have the utmost respect for. They both spoke glowingly about Steve and his basketball acumen. His 13-year NBA experience will be an invaluable addition to our program, specifically in the areas of analytics, retention and recruitment. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Steve over the past four months and I'm super excited to have the opportunity to work alongside him at Wake Forest."

Head Women's Basketball Coach, Megan Gebbia:
"We're incredibly excited to welcome Steve Weinman to Wake Forest. In today's collegiate sports landscape, adding someone of Steve's expertise and experience in talent evaluation and roster management is crucial. Steve's ability to combine data-driven insights with a deep understanding of the game will be a tremendous asset as we continue to build our program. We're lucky to have someone of his caliber on board."
Golden State Warriors General Manager, Mike Dunleavy Jr.:
"Steve is one of the sharpest basketball minds I've been around and an incredibly hard worker. During his decade-plus with the Chicago Bulls?including my time as a player there?he has consistently demonstrated elite knowledge in scouting, analytics and cap management. He brings a wealth of experience and a tireless commitment to excellence that will be a tremendous asset to Wake Forest University."

Chicago Bulls Head Coach & Two-Time NCAA Championship Head Coach, Billy Donavon:
"I was very fortunate to work closely with Steve for five years in Chicago. He was an invaluable resource to myself and our staff as it relates to analytics. Steve is incredibly bright, hard working and a tremendous person. Wake Forest is getting a person that will help take the men's and women's basketball on the cutting edge of analytics. Steve will bring great value to both programs!"
