Shams: Jrue Holiday Traded to Blazers For Simons & Two Second Rounders

Well, mildly bad news there with the 2nd rounders.

The Portland Trail Blazers trade with the Boston Celtics has been reduced to a straight player swap without the previously reported two second-round picks going to the Celtics, a league source has told The Oregonian/OregonLive.

According to the source, a recent review of Holiday?s medicals revealed nothing substantial enough to warrant the trade being negated. However, there was enough there to lead the Blazers to slightly alter the terms of the deal.

Holiday, the source said, is considered to be healthy and will be working out this summer in preparation for the start of training camp near the end of September.

That sucks.  Both Jrue and KP gone in straight salary dumps without any net gain of draft picks.

The fact that it wasn't even just reduced to one must mean something was there and the Brad really wanted the trade to go through. Not having those 2nds isn't the end of the world, but it was nice knowing we were getting something back when dumping players this offseason. It hasn't been great from a net gain perspective.

True. But it is also kind of cool that we got off Holiday's contract given he apparently has injury issues bad enough to renegotiate the trade.

I am sorry but I disagree, Jrue is 35, most would agree his best basketball is behind him. Now we hear about some possible issue with his medicals? I mean say what you want about Anfernee Simons, but, he is only 26, healthy, was averaging nearly 20 points and 5 assists. All due respect, but what were you hoping for?  I think that is a pretty good trade. That said, I am sure most would agree with you about Simons, I am in the camp that if we keep him, let's see what he can do before we judge him.

Or, Portland is just leveraging us.

If I am remembering correctly - True had a right shoulder impingement issue all last season,  many players need surgery to get that corrected - I remember Scal talking about when he had a similar issue. Maybe True's shoulder is still bothering him.

We lost Jrue, KP, and Kornet so far. And now Al is about to leave us high and dry. From a net gain perspective, it has objectively been bad.

I am fine getting Simons for Jrue, but I think most people are rightfully irritated that we are no longer getting those 2nds in the deal.

When Jrue plays like 25 games next year before having surgery on his shoulder, we will probably say no.

I was worried it might cost either #28 or #32 to move off Holiday, imo getting off him for an expiring Simons is still a win even without the two 2nd rounders which weren't that juicy anyway.

I agree. In terms of present day talent, there is a possibility that Jrue is a better/ more valuable player for maybe a year (maybe). The bigger question is Simons value in trade or just as an expiring or signing to a reasonable deal. Paying Jrue beyond next season is likely to be painful for whoever is doing it.

I don't disagree that it's still fine value, but it still doesn't feel good thinking you're getting something and then having it taken away. It's like going out to dinner and feeling like you got fair value for that dinner, but they also offer you free dessert. You see the dessert coming out and you're ready to indulge, when suddenly, they turn around and bring it back to the kitchen. Even though it was unexpected, you were looking forward to that dessert.

In this case, I liked that the 2nds were so far into the future. I'm not especially crazy about the Orlando 2nd we got coming up in 2026 and 2027 since they are a known quantity and likely not to be very good

I think Portland realized that they probably should have gotten more if they were taking on an aging Jrue in a bad contract. He lost a step this year and I'll think he'll lose another.  My guess (and it's purely a guess) is that they are trying to save face.

It wouldn't shock me if there's buyer's remorse.  It's similar to the Lakers backing out of the CHA trade.

I can't imagine Portland was truly surprised by Jrue's medical.
