Brad Stevens on Hugo Gonzalez: "He's tough. He's hard-playing. He cuts. He goes after the ball. He competes. He's got all the intangibles of a winning basketball player."

Well I watched a couple draft videos of Hugo.  Yes what Brad says is true, he looks like he moves without the ball well.  Pretty much that is the only thing that stood out.  Wasn't a lot of info on his def, he doesn't look particularly fast / quick.  I am still bleh on the pick.   I hope he is better than Baylor, and he gets some run this year if we don't trade him.

People expecting Boston to make a bunch more trades. I don't see it. Maybe one more in order to resign Al. But I think Simons, Hugo and unfortunately Niang all are on the opening night roster.

Oh I am not expecting anything, I have no idea.  It has just been stated by others that we would need to trade away some salary to be able to resign Al or Luke.   I guess I automatically just grouped Hugo with Niang, and Simons as I don't know if they will be here at the start of the season.

Clayton Jr is another guy who will be better than half the guys taken ahead of him. Great pick.

Maybe the bigs will come through free agency/trades? Sabonis?  ;D

I don't know what we have left that Sac would want other than JB / White, and I don't see either one getting moved, much less for Sabonis.  I like Sabonis a lot though, he would be a great fit.

Of course Pat Riley took him. Doesn?t sting as bad as the Tyler Herro pick since he was t going to fa to us but that?s great value at 20.
Why does Demin go #8 and Kasparas Jakucionis go #20?

I would've thought Jakucionis is the better prospect.

I like that Jase Richardson pickup for Orlando. Their backup PG is weak with Cory Joseph. Jase has a real chance to beat him out for those minutes.

Why did Brooklyn take 2 playmaking PGs so close together? Nolan Traore and Ben Saraf. I like the picks individually. But a lot of overlap there.

So the Nets 5 first rounders were:

#8 - Egor Demin
#19 - Nolan Traore
#22 - Drake Powell
#26 - Ben Saraf
#27 - Danny Wolf

** Draft Board needs to switch #22 pick to Brooklyn as part of the Porzingis trade. BKN got Terrence Mann and the #22 pick in the deal.

An underwhelming group of picks. Egor Demin is a high risk prospect. Does not look ready to play. N Traore is talented but raw and will need time. Drake Powell is a solid 3+D type low ceilng. Ben Saraf an interesting playmaker at PG. Probably the most ready to play and could be their backup PG next season. Danny Wolf as a Mo Wagner type skilled big that will likely need a few seasons to learn how to work defensively without killing his team.

Little to no help for next season. A lot of risk in their lotto pick and their next 1st. Limited upside in their final 3 picks.

Bad day to be a Nets fan.

Wrote this up for the Reddit thread. These are by winners and losers for the first round.

?-

Winners:

Utah taking Ace Bailey despite him not wanting to go there was the correct move. Years ago Sacramento passed on Luka Dončić because he didn?t want to go over there and took Marvin Bagley. Danny Ainge does not care for feelings and got one of the most talented players in the draft at 5. As a Celtics fan, it was great watching DA all the league for decades and now Utah can see what happens when a GM puts his team first and second before anything else.

San Antonio wouldn?t have changed their picks if they could. Dylan Harper is such a prize at number two then it?s really unclear if you would even pick Flagg over him in a vacuum. Apparently they were trying to trade up for Carter Bryant before they realize they would be able to get him a 14. I?m going to choose to believe that story and if it?s true, it shows solid conviction of their draft process.

Portland is zagging when everyone else is zigging. I really respect Mike Schmidt and it?s very clear that he feels he identified a completely overlooked prospect, traded out of the weakest part of this draft (11-14 Range), and have the convictions to take him as a future compliment to Donovan Clingin. To be clear I also like what Memphis did to lock up Cedric Coward, but I?m just very impressed with how Portland is choosing to rebuild in the present instead of being obsessed with a future that often never comes for small to mid market teams.

Losers:

Philadelphia had the third pick and the two player draft which was not their fault but passing up on Ace Bailey was a fearful move. I am not sold on VJ Edgecombe and at the very least Bailey would have been a more valuable successor to Paul George than Edgecombe is to Tyrese Maxey. They are a team that?s been burned too many times over the last decade that they drafted scared last night.

People who tried to bury Egor Deminpre draft (Sam Vecine). Egor had an extremely impressive start to BYU season looking like the type of player that could run an offense as a 6?9 forward. He went through a slump midseason and many draft experts at him in the 20s. Egor then regained his form for the end of the season, but people like Sam Vecine proudly kept their evaluation. I never wavered and taking Egor was a top 10 pick at this time it looked like at least one NBA FO agreed.

Toronto and Colin Murray Boyles are stuck with each other. CMB or his agent walk backed his all time horrible draft reaction this morning, but I don?t buy it. Everyone thought Toronto was going to take the African prospect and CMB was imagining life in Phoenix when he was surprised to hear his name and gave a petulant if genuine reaction. Similar to Utah, Toronto made the right pick, but that viral reaction brought them right back to where they were a decade ago with a reputation for a place where American players don?t want to live.

Marcus Smart draft all over again.  Need bigs, Randle right there, take a guard.  Wash, rinse, repeat!

I see some talk about New Orleans giving up an unprotected 2026 1st rounder to move up from 23 to 13 to take Derrick Queen. That 2026 1st could be very valuable.

Dejounte Murray is already out for most if not all of next season. Zion is a huge injury risk. Dodgy PG play. Dodgy center play. That could easily become a top 5 pick next year.

Suns building a team of guards & centers?

Strange roster. But their team does look better today than it did yesterday.

A bunch of shooting guards = D Booker, B Beal, Jalen Green, Grayson Allen. Then a couple of small forwards = Dillon Brooks, Royce O'Neal, Ryan Dunn. Then a few centers = Mark Williams, Maluach, Nick Richards.

No need for PGs. No need for PFs.

G: B Beal, G Allen
G: Jalen Green, (G Allen)
F: D Booker, Ryan Dunn
F: D Brooks, R O'Neale
C: Mark Williams, Maluach, N Richards

It does look better than it did yesterday. Mark Williams and Maluach have done a lot to give them more balance. Some interior presence now.

* First 6 games = 15.3ppg 58.6% FG% 46.9% 3PT%.

* Games 7-17 = end of Nov to end of Jan = 8.9ppg 34% FG% 15.9% 3PT%

* Games 18-25 = Feb = 9.3ppg 39.5% FG% 22.9% 3PT%

* Games 26-33 = March = 10.9ppg 38.5% FG% 27.9% 3PT%

Did he improve late in the season? That looks consistently bad to me outside of those first 6 games. For the rest of the season he averaged 9.6ppg 37.1% FG% 22.1% 3PT%.
