Boston Celtics traded up to draft Kelly Olynyk in the 2013 NBA Draft. But yes, they do not do this often.

Totally forgot about that - probably because that night was so overshadowed by the Pierce-Garnett trade.

I also believe Danny tried to trade up for Justice Winslow the following year, something I was totally in favor of at the time. Thank goodness that didnt happen.

The rumor on that one was shocking - am I remembering correctly that Danny allegedly offered 4 number ones to move up for Winslow?

Thats correct from what I remember. I believe Danny made the offer to Charlotte who declined because they wanted to stay at #9 to draft Frank Kamisnky.

Funny thing is we ended up with Rozier at 16 who ended up being one of the 10 best players from that class.

I remember Winslow being my biggest binkies that year - I thought his floor would be an Andre Iguodala type player. Funny how things turn out.

There have been some strange drafts this century, but 2015 might be one of the strangest.

Recalling 2013 Kelly Olynyk (#13) being drafted will always remind me of Ainge missing on Giannis who went at #15.
I don't know how any Celts fan can forget that.  I remember Ainge's interview afterwards where he said they thought Olynyk would be a good complementary role player.  I wanted to bust my tv.

I'm sure Stevens is looking at all options but you don't trade to move up until draft night unless you are at the top of the draft and you don't trade down either.  Now maybe Stevens has talked with teams about moving up if a player he wants is available and maybe teams have said they might be interested in trading down if the players that they want are already drafted.

I mean, Ainge wasnt wrong. KO has had a very good career for 13th overall pick and continues to contribute in his 12th year.

It is much more difficult to trade up because you need the assets to do so and by and large Boston hasn't been in the position very often to trade up.  The one year (during Ainge/Stevens) the Celtics really had the assets to trade up was 2004 and they not only didn't trade up they used all 3 1st's and drafted pretty well getting Jefferson at 15, West at 24, and Allen at 25.  Ainge was actually rumored as trying to trade up to draft Swift, glad that didn't happen.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

The Celtics must have someone they like, or this is a fake rumor.   Come to think of it, when have we ever leaked information before the draft.   I can 't recall anything but disinformation about the draft.  Stevens never shows his hand.

Exactly and he should have also had an understanding of Giannis' potential.  As I recall, Ainge went to Europe and saw Giannis play.  Draft for star potential unless there are red flags.

It's more complicated than that.  How many guys with potential turn into busts?  If Giannis sucked, fans would be criticizing Ainge for wasting the 13th pick (and probably would be pointing to KO being left on the board, a perfect complementary pick for the team).

I think star potential is a hard thing to gauge. Naturally stars are more valuable so players with more visible star potential will always carry a higher bust rate relative to position. Plus I'm not sure how strong the connection between "star potential" and "star" is.

Looking at the last few All-NBA teams, it's a bunch of top 10 picks and then:

Jokic, SGA, Giannis, Sabonis, Brunson, Donovan Mitchell, Derozan, Rudy, Siakam, Booker

Of that group: Sabonis, Brunson, Jokic, Booker and Mitchell were absolutely not considered "star potential". Most of them lacked elite athleticism, Booker was seen as a pure catch and shoot guy and Mitchell was scene as a defensive specialist.

I think there is some variability here and sure the guys with elite tools probably have a better path to becoming great players. But I think it's less of a correlation than people think.

I wonder if this rumor is born out of common sense, rather than any real reporting. If the Celtics are looking to cut salary in the short term and know they won't contend next seasons but plan to contend the following season and will have ongoing salary issues... that all kind of adds up to it making sense to try and get an impact player (get higher in the draft) by moving someone more expensive.

Yeah, it would have been panned as a classic case of Danny falling in love with some no-name player with no jump shot. Giannis obviously put everything together and became an MVP, but most guys playing in the Greek 2nd division amount to absolutely nothing. there's a reason he slipped to 15

Sign me up for a big with great potential in this draft, but if Luke goes then a more dependable, lower-ceiling big might make more sense.
I'm bitter.

when the trade was announced I remember thinking they traded up FOR Giannis. i was pretty disappointed when they traded for a guy Ainge said wasn't going to be a star.
