First game post Devers: 4 hits and 2 runs. Terrific pitching, so they won 2-0.

The part I find hilarious is MassLive and some other outlets say the Sox are still hoping to be a wild card team and plan to be buyers at the deadline. LOL okay  ::)

No chance without Devers

They barely had a shot with him, lol. And the Sox teams of recent years have faded down the stretch, so that's what expecting with this squad, especially given the lack of high-quality pitchers and the bevy of young guys still finding their footing.

Call me an optimist, but there is something to be said for cohesiveness.  The young guys now have ownership of the clubhouse and something to rally around.  I'm not saying I'm buying the bill of sale completely, but as a fan, I'm curious to see what happens when all these kids get the opportunity thrown at them.  And Bregman returns.

Of course if the starting pitching keeps being the 1971 Orioles rotation they've suddenly morphed into they won't need much offense!

Not sad to see Devers go.  Ever since he refused to play first after Casas' injury I was out.  Hot streak didn't change that.

Can't really comment on the return.  I don't know the systems of other teams very well.  I see a lot of people unhappy with it.  Guy was making $300M to not play the field and publicly beef with his employers.  Can't imagine his trade value was at its highest.

I don't say this to take up for the management.  I've heard very little positive about Breslow, and I've wanted Cora gone for years.  I just have no patience for guys on nine-figure contracts who still can't even fake caring about the team.  Good riddance.

It's surprising to me that it seems the players don't seem upset about the Devers trade. In the dugout yesterday and even all their interviews, they don't seem frustrated by it and some guys are still vibing/positive. Some guys smiling. 24 hours after Devers was traded.

For reference, obviously people and players were upset when Betts/Bogaerts left, but even when someone like Vazquez was traded in 2022 right before a game in Houston (well liked in the clubhouse btw) the players and Cora seemed a bit upset and sad to see him go and stated all this.

With Devers? I don't see it. Any social media posts from players at all about Devers or any emojis? I don't see any. Odd.

I don't see anyone saying straight up "good bye Devers, we'll miss you" or sad emojis or things like that. Believe me, I'm pretty active on social media. Some of our current players use it a ton and in the past when guys like Vazquez, Betts, Lester, Bogaerts, etc. left there was emotion and farewells. I'm surprised I haven't seen *any*

Funny to see now that Devers was upset with Campbell for offering up to play 1B.  Made him look bad for sure!

Carrabis was saying on the radio that the remaining Sox players were "not upset" about the trade.

It was a good trade that makes us a little worse in the short-term but will make us better in the long run.

I guess I am an optimist also.  I think they will be in the hunt for the wild card and I think they will be buyers at the deadline.  If they can get even 1 solid starter and a first baseman, they will be fine (although the 1B subs have been doing great, it might not last).  And they are getting Bregman back.  He was hitting better than Devers before he got hurt.  Maybe Bregman becomes the DH so he can stay healthy.

As to the pitching, I expect Crochet to continue to be an ace.  Giolito and Buehler who knows.  Bello should continue to be solid.  Dobbins may fade.  But I feel the starting pitching is the key to contending for a wild card or not.  Much more so than hitting.

I mean, prior to the trade they won 8 out of 10 and just swept the Yankees. Things seemed to be going In the right direction.

I can't fault them for the Sale deal.  He was pretty much at the same state as Porzingis as far as trade value goes (except that he hadn't shown flashes of brilliance while healthy like KP).

For the trade, perhaps.  I wonder about whether the training staff and pitching coaches had a proper plan in place for him.

And as good as Sale was for ATL last season, once the playoffs began he was hurt again and didn't pitch.

But yeah, not pretty from the Red Sox. Sale, Devers, Betts for basically Connor Wong and this SF package where honestly only 2 guys *might* have promise (Tibbs + Harrison). Hicks could help the bullpen a bit but that's about all he is

Remember that time we got Lowe and Varitek for Heathcliff Slocumb,

That was cool.

I think the Devers trade will age better than the Mookie Betts trade.  The Betts trade seemed bad at the start (as trading stars often does) and only got worse as the prospects fizzled and Betts played at an MVP level.  The Chris Sale trade seemed bad to me at the start and kind of held steady.  Grissom has done nothing but Sale has continued to have durability issues.  The part of the Sale trade I never understood is why did we pay a chunk of his salary for ATL.  That made no sense, why not just keep him.

I predict the Devers trade to be more like the Nomar trade.  I doubt we win the WS this season, maybe make the playoffs, but I think this trade will look better in time.  I do expect some buying at the trade deadline, maybe they can pull off another Crochet-like trade and get some pitching.
