When you can trade a potential MVP candidate for a pitcher with a 6.47 ERA, you've got to do it.

I was irritated by Devers' comments, but the reported return is scrub-level.

Over on SoSH most posters (me too) are p---ed as hell. But even they admit the return is not bad at all. Harrison is 23 and looks to be a good pitcher, not a scrub at all. but I am still p---ed.

How??? Harrison is in year 3. He hasn?t had a good season yet. 7-7 last year with a 4.6 ERA. Doing about the same this year. Devers is 3rd in RBIs in all of MLB.   ???

i understand. but harrison's year 3 is at 23 years old. he first pitched in the MLB at 21. really, really young. Bello has had similar stats and he is now 26, but considered youngish and talented.

i wont die on the harrison-hill, but i do think the jury is out of him still.

also, i suggest you do not post about RBIs on SoSH. most advanced stats do not consider it worth considering as a meaningful stat. the idea is that batters dont control whether people get on in front of them, so it is not a good indicator of their hitting.

I am stunned. Never heard of the prospects.  Reading Baseball America, they are all good prospects, but prospects.  They trade Nomar, they win the world series.  They trade Mookie, they are bad for several years.  This one will likely be a little of both. They will not be better right away if ever.

Devers is one of the best hitters in all of baseball. Get out of here with that. He?s an elite offensive player which is why he received a $300M+ contract.

And we thought that ?Major League? was supposed to be a fictional comedy?

Major League was funny and the team won.  Neither apply here, lol.

Henry never wanted to pay Devers. He just did it so there wasn?t backlash from fans like there was with Mookie Betts. He?s going to say that Devers wasn?t a team guy, even though his management handled the whole switching positions situation just as poorly as Rafael did. Will try to sell fans on this giving more opportunity to Mayer/Anthony. Pathetic.

Glad that fat selfish pig is gone. We are rebuilding. He could have helped and become a legend.

But he put himself before the team. When we get back - which will be soon - his contributions will be meaningless.

Per Red Sox sources: the team?s feeling was that a $313.5M contract comes with responsibilities to do what is right for the team and that Devers did not live up to those responsibilities, The Boston Globe?s Peter Abraham posted on BlueSky. They had enough and they traded him.

I wish the return was better, but I'm not too upset Devers is gone. Bad attitude, overweight, and, while good, he's not a superstar like Betts was.

It's always tough to see longtime homegrown players leave, but this is more like when Xander left than Betts to me.

Again, though, I wish our front office knew how to get a proper return for our stars.

Just to add to the conversation and Goldstar's good points.

Kyle Harrison was a top ~20 MLB prospect and literally the #1 ranked LHP prospect in baseball according to MLB for the last two seasons (2023, 2024). He is not equal return for Devers, but he ain't chopped liver either.

I think the Sox could have gotten more talent in return, but settled for dumping salary instead.

The last couple years are the only time in my adult life I?ve been glad to be a Mets fan instead of a Sox fan.  Sox management the last few years reminds me of what I went through with decades of the Wilpons.  Good luck to you.

Just finding out, the Sox also got:

Jose Bello, low single A ball pitcher. Clearly a lottery ticket. His stats in low single A look good and he is only 20.

in 3 seasons,
ERA = 2.97
WHIP = 1.030
H/9 = 5
K/9 = 12

Very impressive stats, but that is in low single A.

Lastly, is last year?s first-round pick James Tibbs III. Corner outfielder who is already 22.

Career BA of .243 and OPS of .783. Nothing to write home about. But in A+ he has hit 12 homers this season, so some power.  Not even a lottery ticket talent.

Does this trade really matter? Ownership is cutting costs wherever they can, Breslow is inexperienced, and we still have a few years left in the ?bridge decade? ? all of it adding up to a team that?s going nowhere fast. So does it even matter if Devers is here? I wish the return was better ? Hicks is bad, and Harrison seems to be a middling player at best ? but it seems that ownership?s plan boils down to ?Let?s hope that Campbell, Mayer, and Anthony pan out, and if they do, maybe then we?ll spend some more.? So until (if?) we reach that point, it?s just mediocrity and throwing so-so prospects and scrap-heap finds against the wall and seeing what sticks.

This is my guess as to how this all went down.  After Devers spoke out about not wanting to play 1B, and basically calling out Breslow and others, Breslow went to Henry and said he wanted to trade Devers.  Henry said "hold on here" and went to talk to him in KC, figuring he could smooth things over.  Devers probably didn't change his tune one bit so Henry said "OK".

As to the trade itself, it is always going to be hard to win a trade when you are trading the disgruntled star, and Devers is a hitting star.  He is also injured a lot and may never play anything but DH the rest of his career.  There are recent precedents; Nomar, won a title; Mookie, played at an MVP level for multiple seasons, Bogaerts, he is hitting 0.231 with 3 Hr this season (worse than Story).  I don't think this trade will turn out as bad as many seem to think right now.  We probably won't win the World Series this season and this probably won't be as bad as the Mookie trade.

"Probably won't be as bad as the Mookie trade" is a pretty low bar.

My point is that people thought trading Xander was going to be as bad as the Mookie trade but it turned out that overpaying for him was not the smart thing to do.  This whole thing with Devers has been poorly handled, or so it seems, but at this point, I am guessing Devers is telling Henry and Breslow that he wants to be traded.  Doesn't seem like it needed to get to this point.
