DeMarcus Cousins hasn't played for the Sacramento Kings in over seven years, but the former All-Star still believes he left a legacy worth honoring. In a recent interview, Cousins made his case for having his jersey retired by the franchise, pointing to his accolades and impact during one of the darkest eras in Kings history.

"That was something that I definitely wanted and strived for as far as why I tried to go out and perform every single night. Accolade-wise, I feel like I did all the right things while I was in that jersey," said Cousins. "As far as All-Stars, as far as All-NBA selections, numbers, gold medals. I put my work in. I think I earned my stripes."

The Kings have retired 11 jersey numbers to honor legends like Nate Archibald (No. 1), Chris Webber (No. 4), Vlade Divac (No. 21), and Mitch Richmond (No. 2), among others. As it stands now, Cousins (No. 15) has yet to join that elite company, but he believes he's done enough to earn the recognition.

"Obviously, it's a political thing," said Cousins. "But as far as the work being done, I think I did what needed to be done to join the others up in the rafters."

Cousins is out of his dang mind. He didn't do enough to get his jersey retired. They never even made the playoffs. They never played .500 ball.

1st year = 24 wins 58 losses
2nd = 22 wins 60 losses
3rd = 28 wins 54 losses
4th = 28 wins 54 losses
5th = 29 wins 53 losses
6th year = 33 wins 49 losses

Traded midway through 7th year. Team finished with 32 wins 50 losses. SAC were 23 wins 32 losses when they traded him.

Never even close to making the playoffs.

Total = 187 wins 360 losses. So they won 1 out of every 3 games while Cousins was there.

It is very difficult to get your jersey retired for only 6 years work with your team. It is even more difficult when you have had any team success in those 6 years. And even in terms of individual success, Cousins was mostly an empty-stat player at the start of his career. I forget when he began to outgrow. Probably 2-3 years into his career. So only 3-4 years of high quality basketball with no team success to speak of. That doesn't get your jersey retired.

Some of these guys have no clue.

I think you're right about the number retirement.  I don't blame him for the lack of winning, though.  Sacramento routinely outscored opponents when he was in the game, but as soon as he sat the team fell apart.

Fox gets 4-year/229M extension.

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45900046/spurs-deaaron-fox-reach-4-year-229m-max-extension-agent-says

Good. Now that they have secured the extension they can work on trading him 6-12 months from now. Clear the way for Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle.

I?m not really that high on Castle that they would need to move Fox in order to play him more. I know Castle just got rookie of the year but it was a really poor class and the Spurs gave him lots of runway towards the end of the season when they were tanking. Castle is a poor shooter and I just see him moving down the pecking order a bit. I?m more interested to see if Harper and Fox can play alongside each other.

That makes no sense. They just traded for him. Fox is a better player.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

Dylan Harper has changed their timeline.

They now have 3 young stars in D Harper, S Castle and Wemby. They can have them together for 10-15 years.

D Fox was a win-now move. Now they are more of a win-later team while those two young guards develop.

Wemby is going into year 3. Fox, Barnes, Vessell, Sochan, Johnson are veteran players. They added Kornet and Olynk, also veteran players. Spurs are trying to win now.

I think they're trying to do both.  I think that Who is ultimately correct that in a season or two the Spurs try to move on from Fox.

Maybe once Wemby is a RFA, but that?s 2+ years away. Not 6-12 months.

Indiana Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle sees a shift happening across the NBA?and he?s not just observing it, he?s coaching through it. In a recent interview with Caitlin Cooper, Carlisle laid out his belief that today?s league isn?t just about top-tier talent anymore. Depth, energy, and effort are becoming just as vital. The NBA game has now become a play hard league, he said. It?s not just being top heavy with stars. Roster construction is changing.

For Carlisle, success wasn?t about stacking All-Stars, but rather building a balanced, resilient squad. It?s become more important to have more good players than be top heavy with two or three great players that get all the touches, coach explained.

They can win now.  Not championship ready but they?re ready to climb the ladder.   I also wonder if they view Wemby?s window with some trepidation.  Lots of challenges for slim guys who are that long.  And he?s already had some health issues. Actually, not really much of a sample size.

If San Antonio were committed to winning - to being in win-now mode - they should have traded one of S Castle / D Harper. Put a 3rd star alongside Wemby and D Fox.

They are not in win-now mode with those two. They have too much to learn. They need minutes. They will hold back the team for the immediate future.
