Just In: The Phoenix Suns are hiring Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Jordan Ott as the franchise's new head coach, sources tell ESPN. Ott has been an NBA assistant since 2012 and has a strong background of offensive and defensive creativity, player development and communication.

After a comprehensive, four-round search that included over 15 candidates, the Suns' ownership and front office aligned on Ott, who joined Coach of the Year Kenny Atkinson's staff last summer and played a key coaching role on the East-best 64-win Cavaliers this season.

Suns franchise cornerstone Devin Booker was involved in the search process during the final stages and stamped Ott as his top choice as well, sources said. Ott has been on NBA coaching staffs with the Hawks, Nets, Lakers and Cavaliers since 2012.

All their top candidates were assistant coaches who would be a 1st time NBA head coach. I don't understand the logic of hiring an individual when you have a veteran team that is in win-now mode. I would want an experienced head coach.

I think Joe?s success with the Cs has something to do with this. Sometimes players need fresh ideas from a young, energetic coach. It?s the same with Ime as well. I?m surprised Casell is still with the Celtics despite all the coaching vacancies.

Maybe they didn't want another retread.
