I?m lying in a hammock on vacation and I?ve got nothing better to do, so I?ve been debating with a guy on a Facebook Celtics forum about whether Al is a Hall of Famer or not. My point of view is that Al has had an amazing career but he?s not a Hall of Famer.  He?s been a 5 time all star.  All D team.  Rookie of the Yead.  And now a champ.  He?s only made the All NBA team once (3rd team).  He was never a dominant player on a great team.  He is an amazing smart and useful player.  But he?s not a guy who I instantly look at is career and say ?yup.  he?s a Hall of Famer.?

My vote is that he?ll likely get in because of longevity and being a genuinely likeable guy, but he?s not deserving of that level.  I?ll be happy for him when he gets in though.

The guy I was debating with told me I was the only one who felt this way so it?s not even a debate lol.

What day you Celtics Strong?
Yup

Since the HOF considers college basketball as well, I'd lean towards yes he deserves it, and yes I think he'll get in. If Horford ends up winning another title here in Boston when it's all said and done, I think it becomes more of a "lock". Even if he doesn't though, I think he gets in. He's also a legend in the Dominican Republic (their best NBA player) and he's won a medal in FIBA for them.

According to this guy ?Andy Needel it's the basketball hof not nba hof that's why you see college players and coaches in there but they don't use college stats etc to determine who gets in?

if he helps us win a 2nd title, and a back to back title as well, I think that pushes him to be a hall of fame player.
How many players have won back to back titles in college and NBA?  Are any of those players not in the hall of fame?  Seriously asking because I don't know.

They said on the broadcast last night he would become the 4th I think.  I know Russell did it.  And Kareem.  Maybe KC Jones from that same college team as Russell.

Yes, he is but I am not sure if he gets in. I am not sure he won't either. He is a borderline case.

Yeah, it's a real small pool.  You're talking 40s OA&M & Kentucky, 50s USF, early 60s Cincy, 60s/70s UCLA, early 90s Duke, mid 2000s Florida.

I am more open to guys like Horford in the HoF than some others are. I value his longevity, team play, and winning. I tend to have more questions about the guys with short high peaks especially when coupled with little team accomplishments.

Horford has good team honours in the NBA but lacks top team honours. 1 title and 1 defeated finalist in Boston. Only ever made the Conference Finals once with Atlanta and they were swept. So good teams but not great teams for most of his career. If Horford had of led Atlanta to more Conference Finals, or more Finals, I would have viewed him as a lock. But without it, his team success is a bit lacking.

That is why I see him more as a borderline case than a sure fire HoFer.

The guy I want to see in the HoF is Rasheed Wallace.

He made the playoffs every year of his career except one - his rooke season. He made the Conference Finals in 1999 and 2000 with Portland. He made another 5 Conference Finals with Detroit including 1 title and 1 runners up in a 7 game battle. Sheed was a key part of every one of those teams. Then he went to Boston and earned another runners up in a 7 game battle as a key bench player.

That is 8 Conference Finals, 3 NBA Finals, 1 Championship.

Most of those years were 50+ win teams.

That is elite team success. He played an important role in pretty much every Championship run-in from 1999-2010.

I don't think Horford is at that level. His Atlanta teams weren't strong enough.

Begs the case for Horry then too I guess.  Though Sheed certainly had more star power than Horry.

I just wish Sheed had better conditioning in 2010.   :P

He will. Don't forget about his Atlanta days. He was pretty dominant when he was young.

I remember the days in the late PP/KG era when we wanted Josh Smith. And then again in 2015 or 2016 when we wanted Paul Millsap or Dwight Howard, but ended up with Big Al. The old days.

I don't know if he'll be a first ballot hall of famer but as has been said I think the college success along with his NBA career gets him in eventually.

20+ppg seasons = 0
15+ppg seasons = 4 (3 just above 15ppg)

14 double digit scoring seasons.

10+rpg seasons = 1
9+rpg seasons = 5
8+rpg seasons = 6

Less than 8 rebounds per game isn't impressive for a starter at the center position.

5+apg seasons = 1
4+apg seasons = 4

11 seasons with 3+apg which is impressive for a center.

I still go back to the idea of whether he'd walk off into the sunset if they go back to back this year?  Ending both his college & pro careers with back to backs is a helluva narrative.

But then, on the flipside , does he stick around to go for a threepeat which is extremely historic, rarified air.
