Moved from a mistaken thread on my part. Apologies.

Just finished watching the the first episode of Bill Simmons' HBO-Max "Celtics City".

Really fascinating stuff focused on the early years of the franchise and the arrival of Bill Russell and the beginning of the Dynasty.
Some insight into the team and Russell's matchup with Wilt and the start of the Lakers rivalry.
Showed some glimpses of the current team and an interesting shot of Mazzulla doing a chalk-talk session.
Spent too much time (over half of the hour) on racial issues. Enough already, we get it.
If it is only a two-part series, I want more about basketball, the team, the important games and series and the players.

It's a nine part series I think.  Plenty of time.

Ahh, that makes more sense then. I was wondering how they were going to cover our entire history after the first episode ended at Cousy's retirement. Not sure where I saw a schedule of just 2 parts. Really looking forward to the 70's team episode and hope they don't gloss over them.

Yeah, those two 70's titles tend to get lost.  Probably from being stuck between the dominant teams in the 60's and Bird in the 80's.

Winning two in the '70s was quite an accomplishment, given the parity of the league at that point?the only other multiple-title team that decade was the Knicks, also with two.

Hopefully, there will be at least one team in the 2020s that wins more than 1.

For the record, I'm talking about the Celtics in case that wasn't clear.

So, it seemed to me that the point of the show is to deconstruct the Celtics and show they weren't the antiracist heroes we think they are. As the author from Massachusetts (who said stories around drafting Chuck Cooper were wrong, and said Tommy Heinson was wrong about what TOMMY HEINSON thought was the best play he'd ever seen) said, they weren't a "racial utopia," they just "found a way to work together."
I can't wait for the Bird years, when there will be a half hour segment with this hater dude and Dennis Rodman, proving that Bird was just a really good player but nothing special who was overrated by the media.

Just finished EP1. I thought it was a bit dragging on some parts. Overall it was ok though. Looking forward to EP2.

I?d score it a 6 out of 10. Hopefully the next episode is better.

I'm glad episode 1 focused as much as it did on Cousy. Episode 2 will certainly be all about Russell.

I wish we had gotten a little more about Heinsohn and Sharman in the first episode, though, since, I'm guessing, we're not going to get much more of them as we move into the KC Jones, Sam Jones, John Havlicek portion of the Russell era.

Of course, I'm sure we'll get more Heinsohn in episode 3, which I'm assuming will be the Havlicek/Cowens championships.

Can't really blame him I guess.

https://awfulannouncing.com/nba/isiah-thomas-no-celtics-city-last-dance.html

Quote
While he was one of the greatest rivals of the Boston Celtics during the 1980s, Detroit Pistons legend Isiah Thomas will not be featured in the Celtics City docuseries. Thomas explained his reasoning for this, feeling that he didn?t want to risk being ?set up,? as he felt happened in ESPN?s 2020 miniseries The Last Dance.

Thomas participated in that miniseries, which chronicled Michael Jordan?s Career with the Chicago Bulls. Five years after its release, Thomas still doesn?t feel like he was treated fairly. With that in mind, he opted against participating in a documentary chronicling another one of his main rivals, the Celtics.

?I decided not to do the Boston documentary because of what Jordan and The Last Dance did,? Thomas said. ?They totally set me up and blindsided me. I wasn?t gonna get fooled twice, so I just decided not to participate in the documentary and be able to talk about it. But I wasn?t gonna go on film and sit there and be set up ? and potentially be set up again ? like I was set up in The Last Dance.?

While generally well received, The Last Dance certainly earned some criticism for how people and events were portrayed.

Thomas? Pistons met Jordan?s Bulls in four straight postseasons (1988-1991) and three straight Eastern Conference Finals (1989-1991). The early part of the rivalry favored Detroit, who defeated the Bulls 4-1 in the 1988 Eastern Conference Semifinals, then 4-2 and 4-3 in the 1989 and 1990 Eastern Conference Finals, respectively. Chicago finally overcame Detroit in the 1991 Eastern Conference Finals with a resounding 4-0 sweep in a series probably best known for several Pistons ? including Thomas ? walking off the floor before Game 4 officially ended. A year later, Thomas was not part of the famed Dream Team, which won a Gold Medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.

Naturally, the Pistons were featured prominently in The Last Dance. They also figure to be prominently featured in Celtics City, as Detroit and Boston were also frequent postseason foes during Thomas? career. The two teams met in the 1985 Eastern Conference Semifinals, the 1987 and 1988 Eastern Conference Finals, the 1989 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals and the 1991 Eastern Conference Semifinals. In that rivalry, the Celtics got the better of the early matchups winning in 1985 (4-2) and 1987 (4-3) while the Pistons dominated the latter portions winning in 1988 (4-2), 1989 (3-0) and 1991 (4-2).
