Cora's gonna get fired if they miss the playoffs this year but while he has his flaws, I put it more on Breslow. He's done some good for sure, but the lack of significant deadline moves while literally everyone else around them made moves, and also just the lack of depth is starting to really show. It's a marathon, not a sprint. Relying on a 3-man rotation and 2-man bullpen may work in tight playoff series, but not a 162-game season. Buehler was a disaster too, and evidently it seems they don't really have a 2B, or even a backup 1B behind Casas (it's been a revolving door all year)

And I mean, this is a pretty pivotal series, right? Meanwhile we're playing the likes of Eaton, Sogard, Hamilton, etc. pretty often. Ugh.

Meaning a shutout?  Because this team, as currently constructed, can't score because they can't run the bases, they can't bunt, and they cannot move runners over from 2nd with no out, or get them in from third with less than 2 outs.  They are a team with speed and no power that strikes out like power hitting teams.  Not a good team construction.

Yeah pitching is not the problem. I'd also argue some of their recent pitching woes (like Chapman looking human) is because they are being run to the ground now and being relied upon a ton. Offense needs to step up, particularly the likes of Bregman.

But also it's rough because after the 5th spot in the lineup, most of the remaining lineup is filled with the likes of Sogard, Eaton, Hamilton, Yoshida (groundout merchant), Wong, etc.

Sucks about Anthony but they also need Abreu back soon to help there

Lost 5 of their last 7 -- and that's against a division rival/wild card competitor and a pretty weak A's team. The hitting is very weak lately, Giolito and Bello were bad this time around, and the defense still stinks.

Not looking good. I might consider saying, "I hope they miss the playoffs so the front office feels more urgency to improve" ... but I think the front office would still try to put out a positive spin, even in that situation: "Hey, we almost made the playoffs this year. We're young and we're improving."

Might be turning into a problem. Bello and Giolito didn?t look great in their last starts. If the Red Sox make the playoffs, the only SP I?d be confident in is Crochet.

Yeah, I guess it is good that the Sox are even in the playoff discussion at this point.  It is slipping away quickly, but that is still better than being out of it.  I felt like they were over-achieving to get to their high point.  Now they are reverting to the mean.  This isn't over yet, but I have to be honest and say that this does not feel great for them making the playoffs.

Getting robbed of getting to see where Roman would lead them is a shame.  It was quite a thing while it lasted.  Hopefully we get tio see a full career of what we saw for a couple of months.

BOS goes 2-1, then BOS/DET are both at 87 wins. BOS is knocked out by tie-breakers unless CLE goes 0-3 in Texas.
BOS goes 1-2, then BOS is knocked out unless CLE goes 0-3 in Texas.
BOS goes 0-3, then BOS is out obviously.

ONE win against TOR makes a HUGE difference. DET winning at least 2 games against CLE makes a HUGE difference.
