Extremely sad news. He was an absolute defensive force.

Horrible news.

Always liked Mutombo.

I wonder if the NBA will name some award after him in his honor, but seems like all the relevant ones are taken:

Bob Lanier Community Assist Award where the winner is given the David Robinson plaque.

DPOY gets the Hakeem Olajuwon Trophy.

J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award (maybe they either update this to Mutombo, or keep the award name but name the trophy/plaque after Mutombo?).

There's probably a lot of programs/awards with NBA Cares or Basketball Without Borders or NBA Academy Africa that could attach Mutombo's name to.

Also reading up on him, didn't realize Mfiondu Kabengele (the C's two-way player in '23) was his nephew.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

So sad to hear, I had no idea he was sick. A great player and an even better person.

Maybe the MVP Trophy for NBA Africa?

Dikembe is one of the rare players that you just couldn't dislike, no matter what team he was on or who you rooted for. I am sorry to hear this news. RIP.

I'm shocked. Had no idea he was sick. And still quite young. He did so much for his homeland. And a great defensive player to boot.

I actually met him once at a community event for kids that was tied to the NBA. He really really seemed to geniunely enjoy working with all the kids laughing and leading them through exercises. Seemed like an awesome person.

Seemed like a great guy. Thinking about Mutombo, the basketball player, and then thinking about the "Who wants to sex Mutombo?" story always makes me smile.
