Bobby Manning: Sources: #Celtics waived Ron Harper Jr., Jay Scrubb and Hason Ward today. All three likely Maine bound. Lonnie Walker IV remains on the roster for now. Deadline to make a decision on him is 5PM on Saturday. via Twitter RealBobManning

Hmm?Brad is probably trying to cook up a deal that would allow us to keep Lonnie and the 15th slot open. I think Springer is the guy to be dealt if ever. If no deal is made then Lonnie probably goes to Maine where any team can pick him up? Interesting next few hours ahead.

It's logical why we'd want to dump Springer.  I just can't imagine anybody will take him for a cost that we find reasonable.

This is a situation where the 2nd apron restriction on trading cash really hurts us. In years past, it would have been easy to find someone willing to absorb his contract in exchange for us giving enough cash to cover his salary
I'm bitter.

Yeah, he?s gonna cost draft capital to dump.

If he is waived and the Celtics stretch and eat his salary, is that still subject to luxury tax?

Yes, we'd pay tax on the amount we pay him this year.

Also, it?s too late to stretch his salary.  I believe that deadline is Sep 1.

That said, Springer is not an albatross, and the Celtics don?t have to move him, or anyone, to keep Walker next week and avoid the luxury tax.  They only have to dump someone by the deadline to reap the cap savings.  It is really February?s problem if they like Walker, not today?s.

Yeah, I wasn?t advocating that course of action. Just curious.

I don?t see the drama over having Springer on the roster and think the cost of Walker is overblown by fans. Springer is really the only non-core tradeable player on the roster that could possibly result in an upgrade, however unlikely that may be. The door is not closed on him being useful. Walker, while expensive when tax is involved, provides a really good depth piece. As a fan, it?s not my money, and the organization is already all in, why would they shy away now.

These being trade deadline problems, I think if the team needs to duck some luxury tax expenses, they?ll find a way to cut out some dead weight after half a year of evaluations.

That would have been ideal. And it's a weird rule to put into the CBA to really stick to 2nd Apron teams who are actually trying to cut salary. Shouldn't that be the goal?

Anyway, if it does require a 2nd to trade Springer, that wouldn't be ideal (basically 2 2nds for a half year of the guy. That's Mike Muscala value!). But it would be a lot cheaper to buy a 2nd round pick later on than to pay the tax on Springer.

And I don't say this as a Springer hater - I actually kind-of like him and his potential - but I like Walker more and that $4M salary is pretty killer when you factor in the tax.

After the Celtics practice on Friday, head coach Joe Mazzulla gave some high praise to Walker and the work he put in during training camp.

He had a great training camp,  Mazzulla said. I liked his attitude. I liked his work effort. Thought he really got acclimated to our defensive system, and I thought he really worked to study kind of the offensive system and kind of fit into that. I thought he took advantage of the time that he had, and that's really all you can ask for.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

That's a lot of past tense.

I?m thinking why did they even make him go through practice if they?ll eventually cut him? I mean he even stayed beyond practice along with JT and DW to do some extra work. A few more hours and we?ll know i guess.

I agree. Wouldn?t make sense.

Celtics waiving Walker.

Keeping springer over him is dumb. Springer does absolutely nothing.

I still wonder if they are trying to trade Springer and keep Walker.  That makes the most sense if they want roster flexibility and don't think Springer can be a rotational player for them.  He's a FA after this year and Joe seemed to be unhappy with the mistakes he made when he got some early run in the preseason.  (can't remember what game).  They can always keep Walker to start the season and since he'd be on a non G/T deal they can release him any time to cut costs.  Trading Springer makes the most sense to me.  he'd make twice as much as Walker so they'd save and keep the better player.

Walker?s been waived. They are sticking with worthless Springer who adds zero to this team.

Not a surprise, but disappointing.  We'll see if he stays in Maine.

Frustrating to keep two guys in Walsh and springer that are offensively challenged and passing on a guy like Walker that can score some.
