Vrabel interviewing with the Pats on Thursday

#1 choice is Ben Johnson, #2 is Vrabel. But I'd be ecstatic with either hire tbh. I think Vrabel is also capable of leading the guys, earning respect and setting a tone which Mayo just couldn't do even as a former player. Mayo just seemed clueless a lot of the times both in the media interviews and the sideline and the players aren't stupid, they can sense this stuff too.

Vrabel can also definitely provide input to the front office on recommendations and such, something I don't think Mayo was allowed to do but probably wasn't qualified either. If he doesn't want Wolf, then Wolf and his staff are gone and there's a new GM + staff. Simple as that. I don't actually believe Wolf, Groh and the others are "fully safe", it's just they still need some staff around to handle day to day operations until the changes occur.

I really want Ben Johnson but I'll be real I think he takes the Bears or Jags job. I don't think it's as realistic although I was pleased to see he took an interview here.

We have completed interviews with Byron Leftwich and Pep Hamilton for our head coach position.
Are these legit interviews or just to satisfy the Rooney Rule? Seems to me that Vrabel and Ben Johnson are the most desired candidates.

Sadly, I think you answered your own question.

It seems to me that the Rooney Rule, however well-intentioned, is not an effective way to improve minority representation.  This seems very obviously to be them just getting the two minority interviews out of the way so they can move to the candidates that they are actually interested in.

NE did give a head coaching job to a minority.  They should be credited for that.  They hired Mayo because they thought he would be a good coach.  I don't believe skin color was a factor.  Nor do I think his ethnicity was a factor in him getting fired.  It seems like since they actually hired a minority head coach, that they should be exempt from the Rooney Rule for some period of time.

I agree. Teams can (and probably sometimes do) interview minority candidates just to check off a box?not because they're racist, but because they already know which person they want for the job.

Hard pass on Vrabel. Wasn?t impressed with him while he was in Tennessee. Would like to see an offensive minded HC.

Everyone seems to be saying it's Vrabel and it'll be before this weekend. Pelissero, Rapsheet, Giardi, etc. I hope they interview Ben Johnson soon and if he says he wants to come, do it ASAP

I thought Wolf and some of the other scouting personnel were supposed to be temporary last off-season and were being used to get through that draft and free agency. Why was there no proper search after that for a GM or director of player personnel? There should have been a complete overhaul of the front office last off-season, with that new GM being part of this head coaching hiring process.

Don't tell me you changed the draft grading system. BTW, the team can't blame another bad draft on Belichick. The scouting department needs a total face-lift. I don't care who the next head coach is, this team can't go 1 for 8 or so again in the draft two years in a row. Especially with how poor their drafts have gone the past 5 or so years.

I understand the new head coach may bring in his own GM, and they maybe deciding the players in the draft and free agency. However, this scouting department will still be relied on to provide their virtually "worthless" scouting reports.

Brian Flores says he's interested. Yay or nay?

But could longtime Patriots defensive assistant ? and current Vikings defensive coordinator ? Brian Flores also be in the running to replace Jerod Mayo?

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Flores expressed interest in returning to Foxborough. But the former Dolphins head coach also stressed that it?s not up to him when it comes to setting up an interview with the Patriots.

?We?re talking about going home,? Flores said of the Patriots? coaching vacancy. ?Where it all started, so I think that?s a place that?s got a special place in my ? when I talk about my football journey, that?s where it stated.

?I would say, yes. But at the same time, that?s not up to me as to whether or not they would want to talk to me or anything like that. That?s kind of my thought on that.?

As a former classmate of mine, I'm bias but would be fine with Flores.  Extremely bright guy.  My hope would be that he learned some lessons from his Miami experience but he knows how to coach.

The Patriots will interview Ben Johnson on Friday, per source.

If he can beat out the favorite, Mike Vrabel, Johnson would become Drake Maye's next playcaller.

Former classmate?  That is cool.  I am not sure what to make of Flores.  He seemed to crash and burn in MIA but in MIN, he seems to be doing well and the players love him.  I am not sure I see him as a head coach but I would love to see him come in as the Defensive Coord. under Vrabel or Johnson.  Our defense took a major step backwards this season.

NFL insider accuses Patriots of ?sham? interviews with minority head coach candidates.

It looks like a sham. I mean, I?ll call it what I think it is,? Breer said during a recent appearance on NBC Sports Boston?s Early Edition. ?Those are two guys ? and all due respect to Pep Hamilton and Byron Leftwich ? I think they?d struggle to get coordinator jobs this year. ?

?And for people who don?t know the mechanics of the rule, you have to have at least two in-person interviews with diverse candidates, and you are not allowed to interview anybody who is working for a team, playoff or otherwise. ? So the reason you would do this and hustle two guys in who aren?t working for teams right now is because that?s the only way to check that box so you can actually go forward with hiring somebody.?

The Patriots reportedly have an interview set up with Mike Vrabel on Thursday. Vrabel played linebacker for the Patriots from 2001 through 2008. He has six years of NFL head coaching experience and a winning record. He is widely considered to be a top candidate for the job.

?I think it?s complete garbage,? Breer said. ?Like, what gives you the right to skip the process that the Raiders have to go through, that the Bears have to go through, the Jets have to go through??

?Teams that are competing for him. What gives you the right to jump the line? Just because you have a relationship with him? Well, the Raiders do too. The Raiders have Tom Brady and Richard Seymour there. So what gives you the right to jump in front of all these other teams??

?You?re worried about losing him? Well, if you have that strong of a relationship with him, you shouldn?t be worried about losing him,? Breer said. ?You should go through the whole process like the Chargers did last year when they knew they were going to hire Jim Harbaugh, probably from the jump.

?They still interviewed 15 head coaching candidates,? he added. ?They interviewed nine general manager candidates. ? Again, it?s like putting yourself in a different ? it?s, ?We?re not subject to the rules,? which this organization, we should note, has had problems with in the past.?

?This is very clearly flouting the rule. And look, we can argue about how valid the rule is and everything else,? Breer said. ?What gives the Patriots the right to do this? They haven?t had a legitimate coaching search in 25 years. The Rooney Rule didn?t exist 25 years ago, so you can say the rule sucks and maybe it does, but what gives you the right not to have to jump through all the hoops that everybody else has for two decades??

Wait, what?  You're forced to interview college or unemployed guys only?

No wonder they're getting token interviews.  If coordinators and assistants don't count, what's the point?  Like, the Bears are interviewing Flores and Thomas Brown.  Is that not "diverse" enough?

I don't get the crying from Breer. Maybe the Patriots doing this better than the Raiders, Bears, Jets? They're still meeting that checkbox. Who told those other garbage franchises to interview 15 different candidates anyway lol

Everyone already knows that it's just a checkbox anyway.

And in this day and age, if any minority individual is good enough to be an NFL coach, someone's going to scoop him up. They're not going to abstain from offering a job because of his ethnicity or skin color.
