I don't get Reed Sheppard at #3. His shooting % is nuts but on 4 attempts a game...

I was going to make a post elsewhere saying that I thought Houston had the most disappointing draft night. To have the #3 pick and to come away with someone you are hoping can be a Grayson Allen level player is massively disappointing.

They didn't even want another young player. They wanted to trade the pick for a veteran but couldn't find a trade. Also disappointing.

But at least take a shot on someone with a bit more upside at #3 than Reed Sheppard. You can always pickup a player like him for the MLE in free agency. You cannot always get a shot at one of those high upside prospects.

A wasted opportunity.

I do like the shape of Houston's team though.

G: Fred VanVleet, Amen Thompson
G: Jalen Green, Reed Sheppard
F: Dillon Brooks, Cam Whitmore
F: Jabari Smith, Jeff Green
C: Alpert Sengun, Steven Adams, J Landale

Getting Steven Adams back healthy and having him as a backup center next season with strengthen their depth. Amen Thompson and Cam Whitmore showed flashes but lacked consistency last year. Hopefully they can take a step forward. Add Reed Sheppard and you have 3 nice young perimeter players on your bench.

Then you have Jalen Green, Jabari Smith & A Sengun who can all continue to improve. Jalen Green in particular had a bad season last year. He needs to get it together and get his career back in the right direction. Jabari and Sengun both took major steps forward last year and there is room for more growth. In shot-creation for Jabari and jump-shooting / continued defensive development from Sengun.

It is a nice looking team. Disappointing pick and all.

I would've loved to have seen Houston take Topic. Or even Buzelis. Instead of Reed Sheppard.

Wait out the year. Let Topic heal. Bring him slowly. Let him develop his outside shot while VanVleet shows him the ropes. Topic the long term starting PG alongside their young wings, forwards and center.

Buzelis would have been interesting as well. Dillon Brooks should be a bench SF. Not a starter. Although he did play really well last year. Buzelis gives them another option there. Or even as a 6th man combo forward behind Cam Whitmore or Amen Thompson as the starting SF alongside Jabari Smith.

Sheppard is so polarizing.

Pros
Very top end elite shooting numbers
Over all elite stat profile especially on defense (analytics darling)
Potential UK stat bump aka number deflated by talent around him IE Quickly and Maxey

Cons
Below average height for NBA PG
Below average length for NBA PG
 Poor point of attack defender
Played primarily off ball at UK
 Low usage play at UK

I ended up having him 12th over all on my board in a large 10 player tier that started with Carter and ended with Da Silva. He is going to be a good long career NBA player but I see him as more of a 2016-2022 Seth Curry level talent. Its hind site now but his ideal fit probably would have been to fall to a pre Caruso trade OKC and backup/play along side SGA.

I was thinking of that as a comparison for Jared McClain who Philly took at #16. Are McClain (#16) and Reed Sheppard (#3) basically the same player?

Sheppard seems like Pritchard, who some thought was a reach at 26. Pritchard led his team. This a bench player who shot 4 3's a game. PP shot 44% from 3 on nearly 7 3s a game as the focus of an offense. Maybe I'm missing something. Ime didn't even like Pritchard when he had him here. Why does he love Sheppard? I guess I'll have wait and see.

I also don't see how Zach Edey can play on the defensive side of the floor in the NBA. This draft has so many unknowns in it. It's hard to project this group into the NBA game...

I do not understand their draft spots

Okay so I am at:

(1) Risacher
(2) R Sheppard
(3) T Salaun
(4) Z Edey

I don't much understand Rob Dillingham either. That guy is so slight. He is going to have a lot of problems in the NBA. Especially with the amount of switching in today's league.

Regarding Edey and Dillingham, I do think each of them is going to a team where they have a chance to succeed, for what that's worth.  I like Edey's fit next to JJJ (mostly; wish JJJ hit more of his threes).  I think Gobert can potentially cover for Dillingham in Minnesota, at least as well as anybody can.  So while each have significant flaws, they're on teams that can mitigate them to an extent.

The case for reed sheppard:

1) Potentially absolutely elite jump shooter.
2) Elite athlete, 42 inch vertical at the combine.
3) He does make defensive plays. Huge steal rate, good block rate for his size.
4) He's a better passer than his assist numbers would indicate.

Basically the idea is he could be an absolutely credible offensive player who doesn't kill you on defense becasue at least he makes some plays.
