The Tatum pick was a home run and Ainge deserves a ton of credit for that. Jaylen was considered a bit of a reach but he was just taken outright at #3 with Simmons and Ingram going ahead of him as expected. Awesome pick as well. But the 2017 one, almost everyone including myself thought Fultz was the clear #1 and Ball was #2. National media agreed. Ainge went against the grain though and still traded down, got Tatum at #3 and also netted an extra first rounder which ultimately helped them trade for Derrick White.

The 2017 one was genius by Ainge and he deserves a ton of credit for getting Tatum in those circumstances. He made the right pick and it wasn't "obvious" to everyone at the time, but clearly it's a home run now.

Ainge got the core (Tatum, Brown, Smart who ultimately led to Porzingis) largely thanks to the BKN trade and other things, while Stevens after taking over has done a great job building the overall roster, being aggressive and also supplementing the Jays as best as possible.

An interesting thought is what would Danny have done if we had the #1 pick in the Jaylen draft? Would he trade down as well? I think they were really enamored with JB.

I agree. And that Jaylen love came from our unofficial scout, Bill Walton.

Walton announced a lot of Pac-10 games back them (sometimes tripping on acid during the broadcasts) Seeing Jaylen firsthand, he loved him and let Danny know.

Thank you,too, Bill Walton?..always a Celtic.

And Ainge deserves (but won?t get, unfortunately) a ring.

So, what's the inside scoop on why Danny... Checks notes... has exactly the same job but at the Utah Jazz?

yeah it was very odd how he stepped down and then takes the same job with the Jazz. wanted to be close to home?

Although I kind of felt it was Danny's time to step down. He was amazing in the beginning, but how he built those last few teams made no sense.

I mean that 2020-2021 roster was pretty poor, we finished 7th in the east and lost in the 1st round against Kyrie and the nets. then he steps down and leaves Brad with this disjointed roster and we start the season off as a .500 team. Danny in the end wanted to hoard all his assets. and i'm not sure what type of team he wanted to build.

In the end, I think Danny was amazing at getting the assets. but his last few years here he was just not good at putting rosters together and knowing what we need. he was obsessed with poor defense/shoot first point guards and letting Al Horford go was criminal.

I am glad someone else agrees that there is no need to thank Danny again. He did an excellent job here, but he was obsessed with obtaining elite (his word) players regardless of fit or their ability to play defense. This distinguishes Brad as a GM and ultimately led to number 18. I do not think Ainge would have done the same.
