Our former players played pretty well last night.

Smart:  17 points, 3 assists, 6-for-11
Timelord:10 points, 7 rebounds, 5-for-7
Brogdon: 20 points, 5 assists, 8-for-16
Grant: 17 points, 6 rebounds, 6-for-11
Gallinari: 16 points, 3 rebounds, 4-for-7

It will be interesting to assess Brad's trades at the end of the season.

This is very interesting.  All of them in double figures, all of them shooting over 50% from the field...
of course if we would have kept all of them, they would have started out struggling like crazy.

The one I really wonder about is Brogdon.  i know he gets a bit underappreciated here, but he was our instant offense from the bench last year.  After our first game last night, I don't know who that guy is.  I guess Al, but Al is so streaky with his shooting.  Maybe PP and Hauser after her remembers how to shoot again?

I like everyone else feel like we got the better player in each of those trades, but we are 1 injury away from having very little bench scoring.

  • Smart will have some real clunkers, we can be sure of that.
  • Timelord will get injured and miss half the season.
  • Brogdon will get injured and miss a good chunk of time.
  • Grant will probably be the most consistently good (and available) of this bunch.
  • Gallinari will get his points, he always does, but otherwise might not offer much.

Plus, the addition of KP and Jrue (if they stay mostly healthy) outweighs the losses, IMO.

To really see I think it is important to note

Porzingis 30 points, 8 rebounds, 4 blocks on 8 of 15 from field
Holiday 9 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 blocks on 4 of 10 from field
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

Smart was also 2-6 from 3pt and 3-6 from the FT line.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

We probably overpaid for Jrue. Brogdon, Rob, GSW 1st (not ours), and the 2029 1st. I'm honestly not sure if we could have gotten more than that haul for Jaylen if we traded him on a similar expiring contract this summer.

Don't get me wrong, I like Jrue a lot, but it's not surprising to see Brogdon and Rob playing well - they are very good players. It all comes down to injuries for those guys.

Yeah, I loved the Porzingis trade a lot - the Jrue one was tougher.

I like Jrue a lot as well, but we effectively gave up two really good players for one borderline all-star on a team that currently has some very clear depth issues.  Are we better with Jrue then we would have been with Brogdon and Rob?  I think maybe not.

BUT where things get complicated is that Brogdon and Rob both had pretty major injury history, meaning there's a good change we would have been without one or both of them for large portions of the season.  And if it happens to be that we are missing them in the playoffs when we need them most, then that value becomes moot.  I have a lot more faith in Jrue being suited up on the court throughout the playoffs when we really need him - I think that dependability is the value add that ultimately makes the trade worthwhile.  But we did give up a LOT.

I think Porzingis in particular is a real game changer though for this team. He brings some dimensions to this team that we haven't really had for a very long time, and makes the team extremely hard to defend.  His health is obviously a risk area, but if he can stay healthy and available when the playoffs come around he'll change everything.

Marcus Smart: "I was told everything was good after asking multiple times. Like, ‘I’m hearing (rumors), what’s going on?’ And they’re like, ‘No, you’re good, you’re good, you’re good.’ And then when I do hear about the trade, it’s from Shams on Twitter before I hear from the team.”

Deciding to play for his home country through an international sporting event over his professional team in the US and blowing his ACL there didn't sit well with me. Irritating that he's now putting up numbers for his new team, while the C's are (currently) struggling to get points off the bench.

He probably didn't intend on blowing his ACL, in fairness.

Gallinari had a good game offensively, but how did his defense look? If he’s worse than Jabari Parker on that end, it would not have helped the Celtics. Wizards look like they will be one of the worst defensive teams in the league. They gave up 143 points in regulation to the Pacers.. Lost by 20+
