JT?s response to JB?s antics. I like it. I think he handled it perfectly. Kudos to Bobby Manning for asking the question.

I feel like JBs schtick must have gotten old after a while in that locker room. He needs to grow up.

This whole beef thing is stupid and it doesn't reflect well on JB.

I understand why he would be butthurt at getting traded:

  • he was drafted a year earlier, and probably felt he was the "senior player";
  • by year 2 Tatum had surpassed him and grabbed the limelight during that disastrous 2019-20 season when nobody was in charge of the team and he became by default "the guy" for the Cs
  • Mainly because Tatum's numbers were better, and he ended up becoming the focal point of the team for both Brad, Ime and Joe, Brown swallowed his pride and played his Robin role even after he won Finals MVP in 2024. The team rewarded him with a supermax where he was briefly the NBA's highest paid player, despite furious debate (here and elsewhere) as to whether he was worth it
  • Tatum got hurt and missed virtually the whole season last season, where Brown stepped up, finished 6th in MVP voting, had career highs in PPG, and said it was his most enjoyable season.

Despite that, the team traded him, implying the reason was because they weren't willing to pay him a supermax extension. Brad said he wanted "optionality" and you couldn't have optionality if you had 2 players taking up 70% of the cap, like they had in the past. Unspoken in that was "we're prepared to give Jayson a supermax extension despite his injury, but we're not prepared to do the same for Jaylen, despite his career, most enjoyable season".

So in Jaylen's mind he felt dissed and passed over for a guy he felt he's just as good as, if not better then. And Jaylen is the type of guy who broods over these injustices. I don't there's any beef from Tatum's side, but I can understand why there would be from Jaylen's. And when he feels insecure, Jaylen goes to social media or his podcast and posts passive aggressive comments.

I don't think he's necessarily mad at JT for anything JT did to him, but JT has become the focus of his resentment. Kind of like if you were working for a company, they hire a guy a year after you, you rise thru the ranks together but the other guy gets promoted before you, gets the plum projects, then the guy gets sick for a year, they promote you to his place, you feel like you did an awesome job, the staff love you, then the guy comes back and the company says "sorry we don't have enough money to pay you both so we're going to move you on and stick with him". So he probably felt major dissed. He's mad at the situation and JT is the manifestation of his unhappiness.

As for Tatum he's just playing his game. Contrary to what most people think, I think most (good) GMs don't involve players in roster decisions because of the awkwardness, they don't want to put players in that position. They don't want to cede authority to a player when it comes to something like that, because then you end up with a "Lebum as GM" type situation. I don't think Brad and Co even knew for sure themselves the trade would happen until it did and they certainly wouldn't have told Tatum "maybe we might trade Jaylen but we're not sure yet." That's not how it happens in professional organizations, sporting or otherwise.

So while I can understand Jaylen's resentment, and he's probably using it to fuel himself, since he seems to be the type of guy who needs to play with a chip on his shoulder, all the passive aggressive stuff is coming across as being really petty. If he's upset then talk to the guy.

Obviously the media has a huge interest in it, because they can weave this narrative throughout the entire NBA season. It's like a jilted lover story, a lover scorned and seeking revenge. And if JB needs it to fuel himself then he'll just keep posting his little passive aggressive comments. Obviously the Sixers fans will love it. But all this is just making him look pathetic.

Yeah, JB's fuels himself on grievances and slights.  He's picked fights with teammates, Nike, the Olympic selection committee, the media, the refs and the fans.  Oh, and the entire Jewish faith.  It makes him the player that he is, but it's not a quality that is particularly flattering.

He's a tremendously hard worker and a great player.  Without the chip on his shoulder, he wouldn't be the same.  But, I had initially assumed that a large part of trading him was his volatility off the court.

Former teammate Blake Griffin commented on the Jayson Tatum-Jaylen Brown drama: "I just feel a little bit disappointed, and I think watching that clip and hearing Jayson talk, you can hear the disappointment in his voice... Being their teammate, being inside the locker room, I know JT cares about him." "Both of them should keep in perspective what they've accomplished and not be short-sighted about what has happened over the offseason. Their relationship is special. It's not often guys have those types of careers and win a championship for a storied franchise like Boston.

PG13 has had two very good games to start the year. Which to me begs the question, how often are we going to rest him? Lol

Agree with this. I try not to get too cynical about my sports "heroes" and their shortcomings -- they're just human after all -- but I'd be lying if I didn't say Jaylen is immature and unlikeable to me with this stuff.

Bad dude? No, that's too far. There are much worse things going on in the league, let alone the world, but I wouldn't want to deal with him professionally. The pseudo-intellectual stuff is a big eye roll that is egged on by the media, and if you call it out obviously you are jealous (or racist, or worse). Like Kyrie, somewhere along the way he became persistently smug and doesn't have the self awareness to understand that not everyone puts him on a pedestal for his athletic achievements. He hasn't suffered by making 100s of millions of dollars to be the 2nd best player on his team (according to pretty much everyone) or get "slighted" from an Olympic team, just because maybe he should shine brighter somewhere else. Grown men don't need to play passive aggressive emoji games on the Internet from their 8 bedroom mansion, paid for by about the most fortunate career path possible in the history of world (regardless of how hard he worked at it). That's just a spoiled child.

Fun player, even a good dude -- but he's earned whatever criticism he gets about his attitude, whether it fuels him or not.

And here?s JB?s response:

He?s really trying to stir the pot. What?s with the ?no beef but he?s gotta stay ready at all times? statement?? And why mention the ?great PR team? several times and yet maintain that there?s no beef? There certainly is beef on his side I guess. Maybe deep inside he feels JT could have stopped the trade if he wanted to. One thing?s for sure, he does seem really hurt with the trade.

Childish. And ultimately pointless. Except for him, in his mind he's sticking it up one of his persecutors, one of the people who needs to be punished for making him feel dissed. If something's bothering him then come out and say so, instead of all this passive aggressive stuff that you have to think about to figure out what he's even saying - you just know there's a diss in there somewhere because he used a lot of words instead of just saying "there's no beef". (On a personal note, I recently broke up with a girl that did this passive aggressive stuff a little bit too much for my liking  )

As for the trade, he is SUPER BUTTHURT about it. It was probably a crushing blow to his ego and he has decided that JT is the avatar of his frustrations, because Brad picked JT over him.

Such a petulant, insecure child. Very happy to not have to root for him and his pseudo-intellectual non-sense anymore, and it makes the Philly hate watch that much sweeter.

Also - at some point he has to think about his legacy in Boston. If he continues this non-sense, how does the organization feel about his tenure with how he's acted since the trade, and does it eventually affect his status vis-a-vis jersey retirement and the like? We have recent examples of this playing out - Ray not having his number retired after leaving for a rival, Perk essentially being shunned from Celtics activities for all of his shenanigans, etc.
Recovering Joe Skeptic, but inching towards a relapse.

EDIT: Nevermind - back on the Fire Joe Train!

I still love JB.  But some of these dudes clearly never learned the value of shutting the **** up. Not every hook needs a bite.

Jayson is younger than Jaylen by two years and he was classy with his comments to JB.

JB on the other hand is always insecured. Can't wait for these 76ers @ Celtics game where the crowd will mercilessly boo him. Give him the same treatment that we give Kyrie.

JB is going to wear out the fond memories Boston has of him if he continues in this path, will be relegated to Ray Allen status.

you're going to be very disappointed because the Garden will give JB a huge welcome back which would be well deserved.
