I missed the loophole where the Celtics can go multiple periods of below 14 players, so after this 10-day contract for Banton is up, they can hold at 13 (EDIT: Meant 14, but didn?t see typo until it was quoted below) for two more weeks and add the second of their 2-ways.  They can also, if they choose, sign one of their 2-ways to a 10-day today, and let that contract expire on Feb 28 as well as Banton, which would let the sign a vet to a rest-of-season deal on March 14, in addition to the other non-Harper 2-way to minimum contract, and still stay under the tax by the smallest of margins, with room to add a 15th player on the very last day of the year.

6'8" PG brings a new wrinkle to possibilities.  I liked him when he was here (was that Summer League? can't remember) - raw but interesting player.

We had him here for the first half of our title season, before shipping him to Portland at the deadline.

He has been a standout with the Maine Celtics?  He has played two games with them.

There are very likely rules and restrictions that I am not aware of, but in terms of the 10-day contracts, there are 52 days remaining the the season after today (Feb 19) based on the season ending on April 12.  And my understanding is that a team cannot be under 14 roster spots for more than 28 days in aggregate.  They have already used up 14.  If you take 14 more out of the remaining 52 days, that leaves 38 days.  So each player is going to need to be signed to 3 or 4 10-day contracts, or converted to regular contracts along the way.  For Banton, due to service time, his prorated min contract is likely too expensive unless they sign him in the last couple of days of the season.  I suspect they keep him on a series of 10-day contracts and then if they want him for the playoffs, convert him on or near the last day of the season.

My guess is that they sign a rookie to a prorated min contract like they did with Amari Williams (0 years of services) or they find another vet that is willing to play the 10-day contract game.  The benefit with the 10-day contracts is that you can sign a more useful vet than just some rookie that has never played in the league.  In either case, they have very little wiggle room.

Ha, as I was typing.  Tonje is a rookie so his prorated min contract is cheap enough and they must feel he will be useful enough.  My guess is that they keep rolling over the 10-day deals for Banton and then sign him to a prorated min contract on the last day of the season, when the cost will be 1/173 of the contract value.

Crazy that teams need to do this, just to not be subject to stiff penalties.

Actually, I misread this, Tonje is a 10-Day contract also. That gives them more flexibility along the way if a more useful vet becomes available and is willing play the 10-day contract game.  There is not that much cost difference between a prorated rookie deal and a series of 10-day contracts to get to the end of the season.

I will have to see what the contract values are for these 10-day deals and plug them into my spread sheet.  Tonje may be just a place holder for now with the team hoping a more useful vet can be signed either to a 10-day or prorated vet min later in what is left of the season.  Banton at least has some actual NBA experience (218 games).

The math is this:

Banton and Tonje for 10 days
12-man roster for 14 days
Mystery vet for 10 days or rest of season and Shulga for rest of season.
Fill 15th slot on last day of the year.  Have roughly $8k of space.

I'm glad to have Banton.  He's an NBA level player, although a deep bencher.

I think there are a number of combinations.  There always could be a mystery vet brought in on a 10-day or prorated deal down the road.  Banton to me fits the mystery vet.

My understanding is that Banton or Tonje can sign up to (2) 10-day contracts.  If there is a 14 day gap in between, that is a total of 34 days, leaving 18 days left in the season.  I think Banton is a 5 year vet, so his min contract value is $2,667,947.  Prorated for 18 days, that would be $277,589, I believe.  Tonje (or Shugla) would cost about half that with 0 years of service.
