"Major Change" to Blazers-Celtics trade. C's now no longer getting two 2nd round picks and it is a straight up 1-1 swap of Holiday for Simmons.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nba/celtics-blazers-make-major-change-to-jrue-holiday-anfernee-simons-trade/ar-AA1I8z9v?ocid=entnewsntp&pc=U531&cvid=e54c5bc5f9804eb8ad7d756618709c8d&ei=10

so nothing major enough to negate the trade, but enough to have Portland keep those draft picks?  omg..

A similar thing happened with the IT / Kyrie trade. The Celtics in that case I think had to add a second rounder because of stuff in IT's medicals the Cavs didn't like.

And it should be noted IT was pretty much cooked for the rest of his career after that trade, sadly, so it could be a significant issue for Holiday.

Always better to trade someone a year too early than a year too late.

no I get it, it just sucks.  did Jrue have injury concerns that we (C's) were worried about?

Sure doesn't sound like Brad plans on making anymore moves this offseason.

I would get use to this roster as is being the one they have most of this season. Probably will shed pieces around the trade deadline. I just don't see this team winning more than 35 games with this roster. Going to be really challenged on defense.

So...

White
Simons
Brown
Niang
Queta

Bench:
PP
Hauser
Tillman
Baylor
Hugo
Garza
Minott
Walsh
Davison

Williams goes to Maine.

I see the repeater the same way. Especially if your team is a playoff team. As a playoff team the tax is payable and reasonable if you stay in the middle or bottom of first apron. You don't want to ditch assets to save dollars. Cs have been burned in those kind of transactions. Saving money rarely leads to good basketball moves and that long term hurts success and lack of success hurts profits way more than the tax does.

I'm fine with whatever this season... as long as we retool when Tatum is healthy and we're competing for championships again.
ok fine

I wish they would have built into the CBA if you have an injury over a certain salary and you get the injury exception it doesn't count towards your salary cap that year.  It would allow teams to sign someone that can keep the team competitive while the star player is out.  Makes no sense.

Also, NFL teams get insurance policies on players.  If a player is out a certain amount of games they get an insurance payout that reduces the salary cap the following year.

I just can't get past how bad the front court will be this season.

Garza, Tillman, Queta, Williams all probably don't get any minutes elsewhere in the NBA. Here they are going to play a lot unfortunately.

Then throw in this Minott guy, Niang and Walsh...that is not much better at the "power forward" spot.

A great collection of guards/small wings and a g league front court.

Center is terrible around the league Garza and Queta I feel are 2nd to 3rd Center quality so they would be getting minutes just not every night. We could do better but no teams are going to give up a top 15 starting Center unless the team deals White for them. Flipping Simmons or Hauser won't net a good enough center unless picks are added. Without knowing how or when Brown and Tatum return makes it hard to just start including picks in deals.

I don't know that all the contracts are signed but I think the 2-way roster is pretty backed:

Max Shulga
Miles Norris
Amari Williams

Amari Williams is expected to be a 2-way,  He will play in Maine for sure, Hugo Gonzalez will too, but I expect him to be with the team a lot.  2-way players can be active for the NBA team for up to 50 games.  We will have at least one roster spot open for every game (Tatum) and likely more than that most games.

I think this is all by design (i.e. having a horrible big man rotation).  Joe will coach to win.

So if Brad had traded Jrue for a semi-quality PF, we might be more likely to sneak into a top-six slot in the Easter Conference.

But by giving Joe this pu-pu platter, there's not a lot you can do with it, other than get a better draft pick in this lost season.

So, it's kinda devious by Brad if you ask me.

There are two ways of reading that:

1.  Second apron penalties are worse than pure tax penalties, because they include limitations on draft picks.

2.  The Celtics will pay to dump salary, but not with a #1.

Yep. 30 teams in the league. Say 30 starters, 30 backup centers, 30 3rd stringer centers. Roughly 90 centers in the league. I would say Queta and Garza are anywhere from 50th-80th league wide at the center position.

I don't think Tillman is an NBA caliber player anymore. I believe his body is kaput. So he doesn't even make the top 90. Neither does Amari Williams who is not an NBA player at this juncture either. Maybe he can develop into one but I doubt it given his age and how far behind he already is.

Then throw in this Minott guy, Niang and Walsh...that is not much better at the "power forward" spot.

Yeah. It sucks. I have Jordan Walsh at SF. I have him around 75th in the league. Basically an average backup SF.

Niang I rate as a bottom 10 backup PF to top 10 3rd stringer. So 50th-70th. Minott seems to be in a similar range as Niang. An athletic slasher & defender with limited offense vs Niang a skilled stretch PF with no defense.

------------------------

I don't think any other team in the league is as pathetic at both the PF and C position. Most teams have at least 1 good player at these spots even if they are very weak at the other spot.

I mean even Washington has Kelly Olynyk as a backup big. He would far and away our best big man. Brooklyn has a quality center in Nic Claxton if nothing elsewhere. Chicago have Vucevic if nothing else. Charlotte have weak centers but Plumlee would start here. And Miles Bridges is a quality SF pretending to be a PF. Plus Grant Williams would automatically start here at PF.

The Pacers center rotation sucks but they have Siakam and Toppin at PF. GSW's center rotation is weak but they have Draymond at PF. And TJD would be our best big man if he was here and he is their backup center.

This PF & C rotation is the weakest in the league. It is not even one of the weakest. It is flat out the worst in the league. It is not close.

I think those are both correct.  Also, the Celtics would likely be in the tax next year unless they plan on blowing everything up, so even if they got under the tax this year they still might not see the long-term benefit of avoiding the luxury tax.

I do think they will continue to look to reduce payroll, because the tax bill is hefty for a non-contending season, but the primary goal is avoiding the second apron.
