So thus far the Celtics offseason has seen us do something like this:

Holiday-->Simons
Porzingis-->Niang
Craig-->Gonzalez
Kornet-->Garza

With Horford still to be worked out. The C's have 14 players under contract.

Guard: White, Simons, Pritchard, Davidson
Wings: Brown, Hauser, Niang, Scheierman, Walsh, Gonzalez, Tatum(injured)
Big: Queta, Tillman, Garza

They are only about 2 million-ish under the 2nd apron. The guards and wings aren't terrible, but the bigs are an absolute killer. Just no way to be a decent team if your bigs are that bad. That might be your path to a "stealth" tank, they still have decent perimeter talent just no shot to defend with your bigs being that bad. Kind of surprising they didn't take a big man at#32 given how things have played out.

Still could see them flipping Simons for savings and/or a big, but then they'll be short on scoring.

Being craptastic at center was my suggestion for tanking.  Look okay on offense and lose on defense.

According to Jon Krawczynski, the Celtics have been interested in Garza for a while.

Guards and wings will shoot 100 3s a game. That really is their only chance to win games. Make a ton of 3s.

Won't have to worry about defense this season because it isn't going to be played.

Agree on the stealth tanking front. Would be a total waste if we did all this just to end up popping back over the 2nd apron to fill out the roster. Think Simons and Niang will remain on the block all season in case anyone wants to offer us cap relief without requiring us to take on any longer term salary obligations or spend picks.

its always a bit of a crapshoot once you get to that point of the draft. But I agree its odd we didnt take a swing there on a center. Maybe they viewed the Raynauds(my preference) Kalkbrenners and Broomes of the world to be an equivalent level prospect to Williams.

At this point...shouldn't the Cs go ahead and try to get under the first apron? What is the point of staying under the second and above the first?

Planning for next year, with Garza, Niang and Simons all expiring. Might as well. If we aren?t going to be great, we might as well suck and save space for 26-27.

C's should try to get out of tax entirely. Way more beneficial long term to reset that way
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

I certainly think they will try to at least LOWER their tax. Niang is an expiring contract that could fit into a team's salary exception and is a useful rotation player, seems like at the very least he'll be gone. Getting OUT of the tax is harder. Only real way to do that is a Simons trade.

The problem with resetting the repeater tax is it requires being out for two seasons, so that would require also being below for Tatum's return season. If you keep your salary that low for two years its actually sort of hard to build back up, it means you will have almost literally zero mid-level salary's and no TPE's to use.

That wouldn't be terrible if you swapped out Tillman for a starting level center. But not having a real center kills that defense.

Yep and that's going to require another 13M in savings.

Watching Niang have to play might be the most depressing. Fat, sloppy, lazy and worthless.

As is this is a 30-32 win team.

I think Queta is way better than Tillman right now.  I don't know why Tillman is photoshopped in as the starter lol
