reactions/observations/overreactions to the pre-season

yes, its only pre-season but with the season starting monday and us playing our starters alot I think we can get a glimpse of what is to come. and so far im pleasantly surprised.

1. porzingus - he has exceeded expectations so far imo. he looks like he fits perfectly in this offense and is getting wide open shots anytime he is with tatum/brown. the pick and pop with tatum looks unstoppable.

2. Jrue - to me, offensively still looks like he's still getting comfortable with this team offensively. but he's still playing great defense and deferring to Tatum/Brown. I expect his stats while they wont be 19ppg like last year will probably be closer to 15ppg

3. Tatum/brown - tatum looks bigger and more comfortable out there. expect his stats to drop but his efficiency to go up. Brown still looks good, cant really gleam much changes.

4. white - seems to be picking up from where he left off last year.

5. bench - pritchard/hauser/horford seem to be formidable contributers off the bench. horford we knew would be good. but Pritchard/hauser look ready for the challenge.

6. defense. jrue/white/brown guard rotation looks brutal for opposing defenses. and KP looks like a solid presence in the paint.

Those a reasonable observations. Regarding the bench, Hauser is in the rotation so long as his shot is falling. If not, any of Brissett/Stevens/Mykhailuk could take minutes from him.

What a sweet shot. I just hope he gets an opportunity over time - no quick hook from the rotation after a poor shooting game. That said I like what I saw from Svi - he hit his open shots and seems to have more of a physical presence than Sam.  Hope it plays out that both can be contributing bench shooters this year.

Pretty much everyone of the top 6 looked really good, but as the OP says, this is preseason (so defense is maybe 70%).  Porzingis looks pretty good on offense.  It's going to take our ball handlers a little more time to get completely in sync with him, plus, the jay have never really been pick and roll stalwarts, so we'll see how much of a weapon that is over the long term.  On the plus side, Porzingis is very much a deterrent at the rim. He's 7'4", so should not be surprising, but I don't think our defense will lose much after losing Rob (which says a lot).  Bonus is that Porzingus moves his feet better than I thought too.

The Jay's look good as well.  It's really just all about the post season for those two.  Have they progressed to the point where you won't see those lulls when the game get's tough?  No way to know right now.

White (not top 100) looks great, Al looks the same (which is good).  Jrue still trying to settle in, which is not surprising at this point.  I hope/expect him to get more assertive throughout the season and become a reliable closer for us when the Jays don't have it.

The bench is a concern; hopefully we can piece it together throughout there year.  PP has obviously done well and should get regular minutes.  He's fun, though limited.  Hauser needs to start making shots.  On the good side, he's really really solid on defense.  I don't expect any other bench player to get regular minutes.

Easy to see why we were eager to move off of Brogdon with Pritchard's emergence. I doubt he will be given as much of a green light as Brogdon, but his role should be what we need out of the rotation spot this season and at a much much cheaper price tag.

Loving the Porzingis addition. Dude is red hot out there - glad to see him get some opportunities down low last game. He'll get pushed around a little on defense, but his size and skill will help and his offense really does make up for it.

Brissett is a bit of a disappointment. Love his hustle, but he is allergic to actually making a shot - whether it be a 3 or a lay-up. Good size and defense, but I can see Stevens taking his spot. At least Stevens has a decent mid-range turnaround as a go-to move and is still effective defensively.

I have Stevens ahead of Brisset as far as possible contributions too. Team doesn't need either too much though. I see starters getting roughly 28 mins a piece or more. The main bench guys getting 12 to 20 mins. And deep bench players getting only around 2 to 7 mins per game.

I don’t know what he’s shot from three but it seems a little high compared to his usual.  So I expect that will go down.  I also am curious about what kind of go to game he has, either in the post or in isolation.  I haven’t seen that much of either.   

So I’m looking at fit and value added more than what shots went in.  In that sense, he’s looked pretty good.

Porzingis shot 50% from 3. Had a TS% of 68%.

Once again, had more turnovers (3.0tpg) than assists (2.7apg).
