If the Celtics start off below expectations, the "secret" plan B is for Van Gundy to take over as coach. I know it would have to be a pretty bad start. But expectations are pretty high.

Must think positive thoughts.  Joe will lead us to #18!

He hasn't coached since the Bush administration.

Jeff notoriously hates when head coaches are undermined. He is very protective of coaches. I bet him coming to Boston included an understanding that he would not coach, even if the head coach was let go.

True, but Steve Clifford, Carlisle, Thibs, Pop are all older.

Just interesting they would hire a past NBA coach, albeit long time ago, to be on the staff at some capacity knowing if the team did fail, the Celtics would go with experience to take over. Just think Van Gundy and Celtics would say all the right things like he's not interesting in coaching but would still put a small thought in Joe's mind I would think.

Sam Cassell is the backup plan for Joe, not Van Gundy.

Van Gundy is not the conigency plan, Sam Cassell is. Jeff would not be a good fit with these players.

I’m pretty sure it’s Charles Lee, who’s the actual lead assistant.

He was an outstanding coach way back when.  It’s been a long time though.

I felt after this past season that our biggest problem was Mazzulla.  He wasn’t ready or good enough to be a head coach.  It showed during the regular season and became obvious in the playoffs.  Cassell and Lee are experienced assistant coaches, but I would like to see an experienced head coach to take over this team.  It feels like Van Gundy is a backup plan by possibly mid season.  Why else would he bother.  Any way, this will be fun to watch as will our uber talented revamped team.
