He makes too much to make sense to acquire and he isn't good enough (and there aren't other players on the Spurs) where it would make sense to go bigger and trade White

Yes, trading PP and filler for Zach Collins isn't really going big. Trading White and his $17m for a real big - now that would be going big.

But then we would be short...a ball handler, and would have to trade a big (Horford?) for another ball handler, leaving us short...a big
When I first saw this, I was thinking Collins and another player for White, San An just doesn't have anyone that makes sense or is valued correctly.  But that is the type of deal I'd consider i.e. White for a big and guard both of spot starter type ability. So a clear rotation player.  Add to the depth and balance the roster a bit more. Something like Collins + Jones for White. Jones just can't be traded until January, but that sort of trade (I'm not sure I'd do that one, but I was using as an examplenof ths type of trade).  It is a step back from White, but the added depth may make the team better.

Derrick White is one of my favorite players.  He is worth more than Collins.

Unless we could trade White to a team that wants an upgrade at the combo-guard spot and bring back a starting calibre big AND a playable backup combo guard.  No idea if such a situation exists anywhere in the league right now.

I'm really quite anxious about Horford.  I don't know what we are going to get out of him this year (going on 38) and even if he does produce decently this year, we are almost certainly going to need to replace him with a decent big either next year or the year after - and we aren't going to have a lot of assets to move at that point in time given what we are going to be paying out to Tatum, Brown, Porzingis and Holiday.

I really do think that at some point this year or next we are going to have to bring in a long term big who can give us 25+ meaningful minutes a night.  Even if we go to Tatum as the starting PF, long as we are relying on Porzingis to be healthy we still need a good 3rd big.

I was incredulous at first, but see now that Collins really did have some decent numbers last year across the board.

That said, this is an 11/6 big man already in his prime who was playing on a 22 win team... are we sure he's not just deep bench material who peaked? Is he also a great defender or something I'm not familiar with?

As many have stated, our biggest need at this point is a big defending, rebounding center who plays physical.
We are still too much finesse for my tastes. Plus a knock-down shooter off the bench. Hauser is not consistent enough.
Although he is Mr. Small-Ball, Brad has to be aware of our need at center and hopefully is looking.
Poor Kornet is currently our backup center and is simply not very good.

I do understand that Spurs want to keep Collins, but they are in the midst of a rebuild. Spurs have mastered finding big guys like Zach Collins (Baynes, Splitter, Eubanks, Landale) so it’s not out of the realm of possibility they would move him.

At the end of the 2023-24 season, Horford will be 38 years old. Although he has one more season on his deal, depending on how the current season works out, he may retire. Collins’ defence & toughness is exactly what the Celtics needs for this season & into the future.

Last season Zach Collins was in the 90th percentile for rim defence, 82nd for block percentage & the 97th for rim frequency.

He is an excellent passer for his size, as evident by him being in the 80th percentile for open shots created for his teammates.

I agree that the biggest need is a physical backup big. I don't know how realistic it is to give up resources to attain another bench shooter though, unless you're talking about someone picked up off the scrap heap. I guess we'll see how he progresses this year, but so far Hauser's improvement in defense and rebounding is encouraging to me.

I would have thought that between Pritchard, Hauser and whoever ends up our 6h men (Horford, White or Holiday) we should should be at least 2-3 major three point threats off the bench.

I really don’t get the infatuation with Collins. He’s really not that good. Definitely not worth the money he’s making.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

I’m intrigued by Pritchard. Elite shooter and he looks more aggressive / comfortable attacking. I’m wondering if maybe he CAN be the backup point on a contender. It’s hard to tell . If those shots aren’t falling m sure I’d feel differently.
I’m thinking the Celts stand pat until mid season and see who wins the minutes / use Kornet when they can but otherwise maybe go smaller when Al is not doing back to backs. I’m so curious to see how these minutes are allocated.

He means Zach Collins who only makes 7.7 million on an expiring contract.

My bad. I actually do like Zack Collins. Except for the fact that he’s hurt all the time.

He played 63 games last year.  He actually seems like he may be fine now.  He had 1 injury that basically cost him most of 3 seasons, but has otherwise been alright health wise (not an ironman but healthy enough).
