The countdown has been initiated, win now mode is underway.

The Celtics are currently over the second (cap) apron for this season, but the pain won’t begin until the following.

It’s established pre-trade that Jrue Holiday expected a contract extension with his new team. You should assume that Holiday would want around $40 million a season, that will put the Celtics at $180-185 million for just their top six guys. This is before Tatum signs his new super-max deal, once his deal kicks in, between Tatum, Brown, Porzingis & Holiday…the Celtics will be at $185 million for just the four starters.

As we know too well, Mr Grousbeck is not the spend at all cost type of team owner, thus in this scenario, something will have to give.

It will be interesting to see what Holiday gets in an extension, and even White.

Horford was signed for less money deep into his 30’s, and Holiday will be 34 at the time a new extension kicks in. 40 mil per seems pretty steep. Hopefully it’s more like 30 mil, and we can get White on a reasonable deal as well.

Grousbeck just spent a lot to give us the best chance to win putting us over the 2nd apron. So using the argument he's cheap doesn't really ring true here. At least now.

My guess is that jrues extension is for 2 years like KP.

Something is gonna have to give anyway with the new CBA. But when you have a team ready to win now you need to go for it. None of this "well maybe next year" it may never come...

Indeed, it also makes you wonder if the odd man out, long term could be Jaylen Brown.

Called winning championships

See Lakers and Warriors for for destroying the cap to win.

Hoops Hype has the Celts as having the 8th highest team salary for the 2023/4 season.  For the 2024/5 season, the big change is Jaylen's 20M salary increase.  Holiday's player option is 39.4M so an extension won't make a difference.  The other players' small increases will be offset by a 7M decrease in KP's salary.  JT's new contract won't kick in until 2025/6.

So hopefully 2 "all-in" seasons will get us a championship.  If that doesn't happen additional moves need to be made which probably means trading Jaylen.
