Celtics: Embiid

76ers: Brown, Porzingis, 2025 Celtics 1st round pick, 2027 Celtics 1st round pick swap

Trade is for 2024-25 season

———

After Embiid’s recent comments regarding his NBA future & his obvious connection with the New York Knicks, the media continues to speculate how long until he gets traded to the Knicks.

My first thought is why? What would the Knicks have to offer? A very mediocre ‘star’ in RJ Barrett or Julius Randle’s terrible contract? Perhaps it’s all their picks that would take five years before they have a chance at being valuable.

I highly doubt Embiid would want to go to the Celtics, nor would their ownership want to move him to Boston either, but in theory, a trade like this makes a lot of sense for both teams.

Boston Celtics

White
Brogdon
Tatum
Williams III
Embiid

Horford, Prichard, Brissett, Hauser, Banton, Walsh

———

Philadelphia 76ers

Maxey
Brown
Harris
Tucker
Porzingis
5' 10" former point guard

Career highlight: 1973-74 championship, Boston Celtics

Career lowlight: traded for a washing machine

How does this trade make the Celtics better?  When you break this down even more we've basically given up Smart, Brown and Porzingis for Embiid.  Plus you want to hand them 1st round picks.  I'm all for trading Brown because I think we need to get some value but this trade makes no sense for the Celtics.

I don't want the Celtics to be on the hook for Embiid's next contract as he ages. I think he has stayed reasonably healthy, despite a brutal start to his career. I don't expect that to hold going forward. The guy looks like he's in pain... a lot.
The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.

Yes. I wonder about this too. Is Boston even better after this trade?

I don't think Embiid can play with Timelord. Nor did Embiid play well with Horford in Philly. So those combinations will not work well.

I do not think that is a better team post-trade than it is currently.

Yeah I get what you’re saying but I think there’s hope for Embiid going forward. People forget that he didn’t take up basketball until 15 years old, and the fact he didn’t play in his first two NBA seasons because of injuries, so he has much less miles on his body in comparison to most centres.

Embiid’s biggest issue is fitness and diet. He’s never been in elite shape, which is a scary thought. He’s pick up bad habits being around the 76ers ‘Process’ culture.

The hope would be that coming to the Celtics, would bring out a more professional & competitive Embiid.

So how does this trade make the Celtics better in any way?

Obviously the Sixers wouldn't want to trade Embiid to the Celts but why don't you think Embiid would want to be traded to the Celts?  He's been complimentary of Celtic fans in the past.  The Celts have a championship caliber team and have been a big obstacle for the Sixers.  He'd most likely love to team up with Tatum.

If we're blatantly disregarding the salary cap rules required for a trade, then I would do that deal. I'm not sure what Jaylen's contract will be, but the salaries look like they're off a minimum of $20-25M between the two teams. Basically, I think you can't include Porzingis. So it would be Jaylen and picks for Embiid, and Philly doesn't even take the call.

Yeah, those 2 are the only people I would make this trade for. LeBron 10 years ago too.

This is the kind of offer that should be saved for people who can will teams to titles. Embiid is reliably garbage come playoff time, compared to what he ought to be able to do. I would do Brown (or Porzingis) plus some lesser assets for him, but not both.
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

The salaries aren't even close to matching, so it makes no sense in the first place. Then we're talking one first round pick, and a pick swap the following year. A trade for Jokic or Giannis would cost at least 4-5 first round picks, plus players.

It's a trade involving an All-NBA guy & an All-Star. You're not going to get 4-5 firsts on top of that. The Anthony Davis trade was a good prospect, and okay prospect, a young role player and several picks, for example.

That could make things better if Philly were to include T Harris in the deal. Get T Harris in to replace Porzingis as the 3rd option.

G: Brogdon
G: White
F: T Harris
F: Tatum
C: Embiid

I am much more comfortable in that team. Great to get a skilled forward like T Harris who can drop 18-20pts a night and give Embiid that floor spacing he needs from his forwards.

I never said an All NBA player, an All Star plus 4-5 picks. By the time Jaylen signs his contract and is eligible to be traded, Philly might have to include another player with Embiid just to match Jaylen's contract, never mind Porzingis. Like I said before, the salaries aren't even close to matching in the OPs proposed trade.

Harris's current deal expires next season, and most likely won't be eligible in this trade scenario. He might have to take a massive pay cut to stay in Philly.
