Jovic of the Miami Heat has added 20lbs since being drafted. He is now 6-10 240lbs ball-handling forward. His shot is still a work in progress.
It'll be interesting to see how he plays in Summer League.
“He’s a great student because he’s always looking to learn,” Heat assistant coach and summer league head coach Caron Butler said. “He’s added on a ton of muscle, looks like he’s grown a little bit, as well. But just him from a communication standpoint, that’s been a point of emphasis with his growth. He’s leading in so many ways. “With Nikola, it’s probably not going to always be about scoring even though he’s going to do that well. But just his ability to make plays with his high basketball IQ is something you can’t teach. He has a great feel for the game of basketball, he’s another one that’s going to have the ball in different regions, whether it’s play-making, back to the basket, getting him downhill attacking, assaulting the paint. You’re going to see him doing multiple things, as well.”
Miami media working overtime to boost their trade asset value!
I was intrigued by his skill set after summer league and preseason last year. Though aside from 1 or 2 games he seemed underwhelming during the regular season, and also when he was sent to the G league. Then it was discovered he had a back injury. He seemed to play better in the G league when he came back after the injury. Some people think he has sky high potential. I’m not sure about that.
The book on him is that he can handle, pass and rebound but not defend or shoot.
The added weight should help him settle as a legit big forward instead of the tweener forward he came into the league as. Let him matchup physically against NBA PFs. So that is a positive sign.
Not sure he was able to develop his jumpshot much since he was injured for a large chunk of last year. Good he is working on it but who knows. In reading that article, his back injury was so bad that he was limited just doing day-to-day stuff in his house nevermind being able to play. So he wasn't working on his game for a long period last season.
