On the contrary, it sounds like Smart is doing the opposite. I'm sure he's aware some of his comments about Joe were used as evidence (and "rightfully so") the team had to practically revolt to get him to make certain changes, especially regarding defensive substitutions. What Smart is doing is re-establishing the hierarchy of coaches having authority and the players falling in line.

You dont Diss your coach in public...Marcus should speak his mind one on one with the coach behind closed doors like men do....

It's interesting to see how the staff is built.  With Ime, it was mostly guys he had worked with or who he knew through the Portland basketball scene.

With the current stay it's two former Celtics players and a really respected assistant coach. As far as I know, none has a prior connection to Joe.

I don't think so either, but it's hard to say for sure- obviously Pressey played under Stevens. Definitely an unexpected name, though.

That says a lot to me ….in their faith of his abilities and trying to save face and respect by not firing him …..which is just a matter of time I believe. ….when it is a “ Good Look “ with less back lash from certain media outlets.

Usually a recipe for disaster.

Coaching staffs are rife with back-stabbing and disloyalty. That is why personal connections & trust are so important between a head coach and his assistants and why the front office should rarely if ever appoint assistants without approval of Mazzula.

I wonder how much say Mazzula has had in these hirings.

I don't think Smart will be around to see the changes.  Just my opinion....

This is Simmons' trade:

Simmons said. “The teams are the Boston Celtics and the Dallas Mavericks: Tim Hardaway and the No. 10 pick for Marcus Smart. And that’s the trade.”

I don't think this trade makes any sense.  You expect that the Dallas backcourt is going to be Kyrie and Luka.  Where does Marcus play?  Off the bench?  Does DAL go with 3 guards?

I will not be surprised if one of Smart, White, Brogdon are traded, but this is not going to be the deal.  Maybe if Hardaway and #10 go to a third team, say IND or WAS, and we get Turner or Porzingis (I know something more would need to be in the deal for Porzingis), but not as Bill Simmons has it.  And even with this version, which works better for BOS, I still don't see the fit for Marcus in DAL.

Interesting idea. Although may have to give Dallas the 35 pick also to get it done.

Could draft Lively from Duke with the 10th pick.  He has been climbing the draft board a lot lately.  Would be good starting center eventually. If Cam Whitmore from Villanova drops, could grab him there. Could become starting power forward pretty quickly if  he pans out. Same with Taylor Hendricks. Those two guys seem legit.

You left out the best part of the quote:

“I think this trade is really logical, I think it’s exceedingly fair and I don’t know which team would turn it down,” Simmons said. “The teams are the Boston Celtics and the Dallas Mavericks: Tim Hardaway and the No. 10 pick for Marcus Smart. And that’s the trade.”

Luka is 6'7" and can defend wings.  Some teams run starting lineups with 3 guard types.  Also who knows where Kyrie will end up?

I don’t want to underestimate the poor management in Dallas, but it does not seem to me like a smart trade for Dallas.

Yeah, I don't like it for Dallas. I understand the idea of getting a defender next to Luka & Kyrie but I don't like Smart's offensive game on that team. Not a good enough shooter to be enough of an off-ball threat. And with Luka & Kyrie, Smart will hardly ever get to make use of his ball-handling & passing abilities so his offensive game will largely be reduced to jump-shooting which is dodgy at. Not good.

I wouldn't give up the #10 pick for Smart due to his poor fit in Dallas' team. There are some good players available there at #10 who can have comparable long term value as Smart has had as a player. Better to hold the pick and use it.

For Boston

I am not wild about Tim Hardaway. He is a black hole type of player. A gunner who doesn't pass. He plays mediocre defense and gives mediocre rebounding. Yes, he can shoot the 3 but the rest of his game is lackluster. Even though he has wing size, he is no better defensively than playing Smart or D White at SG. In fact, he is worse. I worry about his non-passing on a team with Jaylen Brown and Tatum which will make good ball movement even harder.

I do like the #10 pick. That is the prize. I would trade Smart for the #10 pick if someone specific I wanted was available at that pick. So in this sense, I do the trade even though I am down on Tim Hardaway Jr. I would like to trade Hardaway elsewhere in subsequent deal rather than keep him but he would be a fine bench player if an adequate trade cannot be found.

So good for Boston, bad for Dallas. My take.

You bring up an interesting point. It's my impression that head coaches usually pick their assistants. The new assistants may be good, but if Joe had no or little say in their selection, will he tune them out?

I’m sure Mazzulla met with and approved every hiring.  Stevens might have used his own connections to reach out, and maybe some of their agents reached out to the Celtics, because it was no secret they were in the assistant coach market. But there’s zero chance any of them would accept the job without having met with and connected with their future boss, nor that Stevens would have hired someone Joe did not like.
