BREAKING: 76ers G James Harden is picking up his $35.6 million option and sides are beginning to work together in exploring trade scenarios, sources tell ESPN. It’s expected that Harden has played his last game for Philadelphia.

I don't understand. Why is picking up the option if he wants to leave? Is there no teams with cap space that he wants to go to? So he opts in and Philly trade him?

What if Philly does not want to trade him?

Isn't this better for Philly too because they can take something in return, since otherwise they don't have the cap space? And I don't think there are enough quality teams with the cap space available. So this way he can actually find a home and Philly can get some value for it, right?

He has forced two trades since January 2021, so he seems to be unconcerned if the Sixers want to keep him.

My guess is Harden (or at least his people) has been trying to manipulate Philly to give him a max deal for a while now.

That's what all that nonsense throughout the season was that there was a strong possibility he would sign with Houston.  It was really just to put pressure on Philly.  Because guess what, it's free agent time now, and Houston apparently has no desire to pay Harden.

So Harden, going the scorched earth strategy and demands a trade, because nobody really has cap room to sign him.  Now he's trying to find some other contender to move onto.

I think if Philly was going to pay him, he'd be more than happy to stay though.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

Teams with cap space:

1 Rockets: $60.9M
2 Spurs: $38.6M
3 Kings: $34.8M
4 Pacers: $30.4M
5 Jazz: $28.4M
6 Pistons: $26.3M
7 Magic: $23.9M
8 Thunder: $16.6M

Houston is really the only team that can give him his max, but it looks like they've pivoted to FVV.
2021 Houston Rockets
PG: Kyrie Irving/Patty Mills/Jalen Brunson
SG: OG Anunoby/Norman Powell/Matisse Thybulle
SF: Gordon Hayward/Demar Derozan
PF: Giannis Antetokounmpo/Robert Covington
C: Kristaps Porzingis/Bobby Portis/James Wiseman

Back to Houston I’d suspect. Would make the Rockets interest in 29 year old VanVleet make a bit more sense…

How about Miami as a landing spot?

Tyler Herro & Lowry for Harden.
Or Herro + D Robinson for Harden.

Something like that. Herro would be an interesting partner for Maxey in the backcourt. They have T Harris at forward. PJ Tucker. If they can get Lowry, he'd be a good fit for their bench. If it is D Robinson, at least he is a shooter to space the floor for Embiid.

G: Maxey
G: Herro
F: T Harris
F: PJ Tucker
C: Embiid

It is a fun lineup.

I actually don't believe Miami would show real interest. They seem to hold their players to high expectations for conditioning and Harden's never taken that seriously.

Harden would be pretty fun on the Magic. They desperately need some help at guard.

G: C Anthony
G: J Harden
F: F Wanger
F: Banchero
C: W Carter Jr

That is a dang good team. Puts Orlando not only back into the playoff mix but up near the middle of the pack if not towards the top of the playoff pack.

Give up J Isaac as a cap makeweight, 1-2 of their young guys, maybe future picks. Not a great offer for Philly. Maybe there is a better option than J Isaac that allows them to keep their cap flexability for 2024 when T Harris' contract expires. Give them some other assets (picks, young ones) to reload in 2024.

The 76ers won't want Robinson's money on the books, he's overpaid. And Lowry+Herro for next year combine for 56 million which is too much money.

Hero + Caleb Martin or Nikola Jovic would be close salary wise.

But Heat may want to wait and see what happens with Lillard.

Harden for PG13 is an interesting trade for both teams.

LAC gets to move on from the Kawhi / PG13 tandem that has failed to win a title. They bring in Harden to be their main ball-handler and offensive focal point.

Actually, maybe they offer Kawhi for Harden instead of PG13. PG13 has been the healthier of the two. Keep PG13 and Harden together.

Philly will be hard pressed to get any better offers talent wise than PG13 or Kawhi. There is injury risk sure. But so few suitors who can give up real talent for Harden and keep Philly near the top of the pack next season.

That is cool. Better for Philly. Harden makes less money than I thought.

Philly is going to end up with Norman Powell/Terrence Mann/Marcus Morris.

I don't think Philly will get that much in return.

Sticking with the Clippers, I'd expect something more like Powell + Morris + pick.
