Gary Washburn: #Celtics majority governor Wyc Grousbeck: “I look at the next six years as a real opportunity for us. We’re gonna keep doing this until we uncover that banner or die trying. We’re going for banner 18 and we’re gonna keep going.”  – via Twitter GwashburnGlobe

Bobby Manning: Grousbeck: “We haven’t blinked at all (about spending)…we’re aware of the (second apron)…we’re going to be over.”  – via Twitter RealBobManning

So, what’s the significance of the six years comment?

Brown’s contract ends in six years, and more than likely Tatum’s extension will end the same time with him almost assuredly getting a player option for the final year.

So sounds to me like they’re planning on spending and trying to win big over the next 5-6 years of the Jays’ prime while we have control of them together. Of course, whether that really happens will depend on our success and if the cap continues to rise. Hard to justify keeping both that long if we aren’t winning.

But so far they’ve put their money where their mouth is, at least this off-season.

Yes, and what happened to all the people who kept calling them cheap owners?

Of those 6 years, I want at least 3 more banners. I just want Boston to three-up the Lakers.

Let's see what they do with the TPE.  Last year they cut payroll during the season, and wasted several trade assets.

Interview with JT:  https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10092296-br-exclusive-jayson-tatum-talks-new-look-celtics-title-expectations

Nothing Earth shattering.  I found this part interesting, particularly as we've seen stars try to act like GMs:

Quote
Management often consults with their star players before any drastic moves are executed. Tatum said he chooses not to get embroiled in those conversations on a deep level out of respect for his teammates.

"For the most part, I try to stay out of it," Tatum told B/R. "I may have conversations with Brad about whether I would like to play with this guy one day or do I think he would be a good fit. I think that's with any organization.

"But I saw on Twitter that we traded for Jrue Holiday and likewise with K.P. and trading Smart. I never want to get involved with things like that. My job is to show up and play. It's not my job to trade and handpick guys or anything like that.

"A lot of those guys that we traded, I was really close with. I spent my entire career thus far with Smart and almost my whole career with Grant and Rob, and a year with Malcolm. It's always tough to see guys leave, especially when it's on short notice."

It's wild to me that the organization keeps things that close to the vest, to the point where the players aren't getting at least a text or a call to announce these trades before they're in the media.  I think it's an interesting work dynamic.  I understand the inverse, though.  If JT signs off on a guy like Brogdon getting traded, and then the trade falls apart, there are then hard feelings not only against management, but among the players, too.

Good points.  This is what I was thinking about when there were reports that Tatum was lobbying Lillard about coming to Boston.  Not sure if those reports were true or not, I had my doubts for just the reasons that Tatum describes.  If you are working to bring Lillard in via a trade (different if a FA), then you are also working to send someone out.

The reports were mostly inference based on social media, from what I seem to remember. But guys are going to talk - impossible to keep them from doing it, I think.

Jrue's press conference was similar to KG back in 2007.

I like. Jrue could be our Ray Allen as Porzingis could be our KG.

I don't think it's possible to reach that 2007 level of excitement going into a season. However, this off-season was the closest since then. I can't wait for the games to begin.

I feel the same way, but I wonder how much of that is recency bias.  I was stoked when we added Rasheed, and Shaq/JO, and Brogdon.  I didn't love the Kyrie trade, but having him, Hayward and Horford looked massive.  I know I was extremely excited each time.  I don't have any way other than flawed memory of comparing those off-seasons to this one.

That was a great off-season too, that evaporated away 5 minutes into the season in Cleveland. That was so bad, that I completely forgot about it until you mentioned it.

I'm not sure if it's recency biased. For me, it's the idea that ownership and Brad Stevens are all in on trying to win a title this season. Come the trade deadline, I would expect something to happen to help the team even more.

Agreed.  I think there was immense excitement about the Hayward signing and then the Kyrie trade.  Hayward was the #1 free agent and he chose Boston.  However, I do believe this season provides the best opportunity to win a ring since KG

I wonder how many times teams have been burnt by players leaking when they've been informed of an imminent trade. Seems weird otherwise

I'm pretty sure that Brogdon didn't like being floated in trades, in addition to understanding that he would still come off the bench. I'm not 100% on this, but I think it's why he was less than content.

Players are paid big to play, and GMs are responsible for the roster. A good GM will consider how players fit together. I think Stevens has put together an excellent team on paper. I also think the bench is underrated.

Jrue is a competitor. He's older than both Tatum and Brown. If he's the leader, I'm ecstatic.
The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.

I see Jrue as "a leader" rather than "the leader". He can be one of the leadership group but not the main man that others follow. He just does not have the talent to justify that. Only Tatum does on this team.

DJ could never be the leader over Bird. That is not to say he did not have a leadership role. He was one of the leaders on the team rather than the main leader which was Bird.
