Idk if people watching the game heard it on the broadcast, but there were times at the arena when Young would shoot FTs and everyone would chant “overrated” at him. Or even simply when he touched the ball on some possessions.

I thought it was sort of cringe and so did my sister. We like Young, and thought it was a bit harsh.

But at the same time our whole section was talking about how he’s overrated for most of the game and hated his game/style of play.

What do people here think? Not sure what it is but it seems like a lot of people don’t like Young and idk why. He doesn’t strike me as cocky either or with an ego

Yes he is. It’s easy to fall in love with the little guys. It’s inspiring watching 5’ nothing guys score and assist against the biggest fastest humans on the planet.

However, when push comes to shove, these little supermen get hunted down on defense. Trey had the worst plus minus tonight minus 18 I believe.

Saw that all game last game, find who trey is guarding and exploit it. Wouldn’t trade him for Smart, and I’m sick of Smart go figure.

Might have been because of this:

Quote
Trae Young stood at the free-throw line and chewed on his mouthpiece as loud chants of “overrated” rained down at TD Garden on Wednesday night.

The two-time All-Star guard had another rough shooting night during Atlanta’s 119-106 loss to Boston. He went 9-22 from the field, including 2-8 from 3-pt. range, with five turnovers.

Young was also voted the NBA’s “most overrated” player in an anonymous player poll conducted by The Athletic.

Celtics fans have had some things to say to him ever since his dustup with Smart.

All in good fun though.  Frankly ‘overrated’ is one of the tamest things a fan can say to an opposing player.  And credit to Trae for taking it better than most - his series against NY a few years ago was great entertainment.  Not every player can handle being the villain.

I know that poll was in my head as I was chanting it.  I thought it was a great taunt.

Trae is such a disaster defensively. He is probably the worst defender in the league out of players that play big minutes. And then on offense he is only effective when he is monopolizing the ball.

Those polarizing characteristics to his game. Stuff that turns off a lot of fans.

I feel the over-rated stuff ratched up after the team took a step back after that playoff run a few years. The reason for that drop-off is not down to Trae Young but down to management's bad job on roster construction. It is unfair that Trae gets blamed for that. But this if often the case for franchise players.

I don't have strong feelings for Lil Trae personally, but it could be the fact that he developed that annoying move where he would run around a screen and then stop and milk a foul from his defender. He's so little that when they run into him he really got bowled over.

I think just hated. He is an amazing offensive player, almost matched by his woeful defence. But his hate stems from his willing engagement of the role of the villain - he loves it!

SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)

Super talented one-way player. So many here loved IT and wanted him back. Trae essentially has had a career of IT’s best year.  Trae doesn’t rate himself - the “overrated” chant is really an insult to media and fans who think he’s a bit more of an impact player than perhaps he is.  Maybe Trae also overrates himself — but my guess is he’s in the company of just about every NBA player in that.

Watch out - clearly another jinx thread.

  • GOT IT!!!
His career has gone about what I expected coming out of OU. He’s just too small to be effective long term on a contender. Unless he’s ok being that spark plug off the bench he’s destined to be starting on mediocre teams.

I think what’s hard to watch with Trae (at least for me) isn’t so much that he’s over powered on the defensive end because of his size, but more so his complete lack of effort on that end. He just absolutely dies on screens and doesn’t even try to navigate them. There was also a play last night where Smart was going to work on him in the post and Trae wanted no part of being there. Didn’t accept the challenge, didn’t try to embrace any sort of contact, just kind of stood there and let Smart walk him right to the front of the rim. I remember with IT he was always a defensive liability, but I’m not sure anyone questioned his effort (at least in the playoffs). If I had to play with someone who gave that little effort on defense it would p--- me off.

I'm disappointed in him.  He's largely an inefficient chucker who doesn't play defense.  Last year he looked like he might be turning a corner; this year he looks like he did as a rookie.

The Athletic did an anonymous survey of 108 NBA players.  For the most underrated player questions only 54 players responded.  Young led with 14.8% (8 votes).

Jrue Holiday did well.  For the "Who's the best defender" question, he received 28.7% of the 98 votes.  Dort was 2nd with 11.4%.  For the "Who's the most underrated player" question, Holiday received 17.5% of the 97 votes.  SGA was 2nd with 11.3%.

Jrue is also widely considered to be an ideal teammate and is a great guy in the community.

I said years ago -- I think it was before Kyrie got traded here -- that I'd rather have Jrue Holiday on my team than Kyrie.  People thought I was either out of my mind, or marketing (it was in conjunction with one of the CB fantasy simulation drafts).  Flash forward several years, and I think almost everybody who takes basketball seriously would rather have Holiday.

Trae is fiery and a great offensive talent. Quick, can get to the rim and finish with a floater or set up teammates for a dunk,  can shoot quick with range. But... he doesn't make his team better. Lack of defensive effort and ability and no off ball movement. If the ball isn't in his hands he adds nothing, you can't win consistently with that as your best player. His on/off splits for this series are pretty telling. His team is better when he sits.

He's the NBA version of the kind of guy I always hated playing with. Best (or one of the best) player on the floor but a boor to play with, doesn't engage in the team game, mostly just gets his.

Want to add....I think Ja Morant is sort of in this same vein.
