I haven't watched an all star game in any sport in years. I watch sports for the competitive aspect. Remove that and I'd rather read a book. But I have to say the XFL game on at the same time wasn't bad. I watched that for a while.

I don’t know how it is now but MLS used to have a game against the Mexican League All Stars that was pretty good and competitive too.

I need to amend what I said. Major League soccer varies their format and some years it's very interesting. That one I've watched.

They'll bring in a major Euro Club during their pre season or last year they played the Mexican League all stars. The game is usually fairly competitive. One of the more intersesting ones was vs Manchester United a few years ago. The MLS team did pretty well the first half. Sir Alex Ferguson must have read his team the riot act at half time because in the 2nd half Manu came out and dominated.

I think baseball is fundamentally different in that the team in the field has to actually play defense to get off the field and have a chance to bat. Guys may not go all-out on defense, but they actually have to make outs in order to keep the game moving.

In basketball, though, when one team scores, the other automatically gets the ball. No defense required.

I didn't watch the game, but I just watched some "highlights," and man, most of the players are walking 95% of the time. Some of them spent their whole on-court time between the two foul lines. I mean, pickup games at the local rec center are way more entertaining.

Good point.  If guys fear losing the dunk contest, I bet 1-on-1 would be worse.  Imagine Lebron loosing 1-in-1 in the first round to Markannen, for instance.

I'd like to see a 3-on-3 tournament.  That could be exciting if done well.

Does anyone else remember the one year when someone held some sort of NCAA 1-on-1 competition just before the draft? I know that Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, then known as Chris Jackson, was one of the players. Bo Kimble was another player in the tourney. The tournament was like a John Calipari recruit, one and done.
