Would you trade pGs with the Nets? Smart for Simmons?

Or maybe you like Simmons as a C. R.Will for Simmons?

Its a think either way...who impacts winning more?

That was arguably Simmons best game of the year, and he scored 0 points in a double-digit loss.  I'll take Smart, thanks.

This issue with Simmons is he is overpaid drastically. I actually think he’s be a useful role player if he wasn’t making like $35 mil a year. He’s got size, is an excellent defender, and can run the point. But considering his limitations as a shooter, it’s hard to justify his salary. If he was making like $10-15 mil, it would be a lot more palatable to have him on your roster.

Simmons is shooting 41% from the free throw line.  That’s going to be a problem again come the playoffs.

This is right. Also, it’s really a question what he can give you in the playoffs. Smart plays some of his best games on the biggest stage. He’s absolutely won playoff games for them. Find it very hard to see Simmons doing that.

why would anyone consider giving up a useful rotation-quality player for Simmons?  teams can play off him - dare him to shoot and play the passing lanes.

thought the "trade for Simmons" threads were finally dead and that tonight's performance would just be throwing more dirt on the grave of those threads.  apparently not

Hard pass on Simmons. I don’t think he’s improved at all since the day he came into the league….in fact he’s got worse. At some point you realize continually having potential means you haven’t achieved it yet.

As @PAOBoston said it’s also a cost benefit thing…Smart is outperforming his $17m a year contract while Simmons is underperforming his $35m a year one,

I wouldn’t want Simmons on the Celtics even if he could be acquired for free.

I agree with you from an emotional standpoint, but it'd be crazy not to have him on the bench if there was no salary cap consideration - even if he sits the fourth quarter, at the very least he's (extreme overkill for) injury protection.

Hahaha, all fair enough. I hadn't considered the financial angle. Regardless, from a pure value on the court perspective Smart does more, not the least of which is provide stability and fire.

Kinda thought someone would bite tho....maybe they're hiding...guess this topic is dead/past its' prime.

I said something similar in another thread but Simmons is a tragic character.  So much talent.  You see him move on the court, at his size, seeing the floor, it is stunning how good he is.  Then he has to pick up the ball and shoot and his mind locks up.  He has had the yips for nearly 3 years.  This is all in his head.

But no, the Celtics is not the team that is going to be where he figures this out (if he ever does).  It seemed like the Nets might be a good place.  He could let Durant and Kyrie take pressure off of him.  But after a whole season off and now 40 games into this season, there is no improvement.  He is the same.

He is on the books for 2 more seasons after this one, at close to $40M per.  In spite of that, I would not be surprised if he is traded again, some other team takes a chance on him.  But no way should that team be the Celtics.  Even if we had a bad contract like Westbrook or something, I wouldn't want Simmons on the Celtics right now.  Certainly not trade an important player like Smart.

It will be interesting to see if he takes the opportunity of KD being out for a month and try to take a more active role in the offense. Right now he's averaging 6FGA and 1.5FTA. Or will he stick to what he is good at, which is rebounding, defending and passing?
