What do we do with our non-guaranteed players?

On January 10, the contracts of Kornet, Vonleh and Jackson become fully guaranteed for the rest of the season.

We've got three options for each player:

1.  Keep them;

2.  Waive them;

3.  Trade them at any point before the deadline.

If we waive a player, we have to pay luxury tax on the salary they've been paid to date.  If we trade them, we can potentially get out of paying the tax for them.  The downside is that if we keep a player past January 10 and then can't find a trading partner, we're on the hook for their entire 2023 salary, even if we eventually cut them to sign a useful player.

Keep Kornet and Vonleh (with the understanding that if we bring in someone better we might just need to waive them and eat their full salary). Cut Jackson and focus on bringing in a legit rotation player to replace him.

I don't think Brad's waiving any of them.  Vonleh and Jackson are possible trade assets for the deadline but I don't see that as a high probability.

If I was Brad though, what I'd do failing a trade:
- Kornet - keep.  he's shown he can be useful.
- Jackson - waive him.  been a useless signing.  would consider his contract a sunk cost and value the opened roster spot a more valuable asset.  even if the spot isn't used because no one of value is available, dumping what's left of his deal is still more valuable than he has been this year.
- Vonleh - on the fence.  has been useful in spots but overall not useful enough to be used in many games effectively.  not sure the opened spot created by waiving him could be used on someone more useful in the buyout market.

Kornet is set.   He is the third C who is important when Horford or Rob is out.   


I could see one of the other two waived if the Celtics plan to dip into the buyout market and use 10 day contracts to fill in holes as needed.

I don't see them doing anything with them specifically.  They might end up part of some other deal or may get cut to make room if they need to make room but they are not going to cut any of these players just to cut them.  They will be the collateral damage, not the main objective.

I still think they are looking at trades.  They could use a back up SF (the Hauser magic is starting to wane) and of course, another decent big is something they could use.  I think White could get traded.  Pritchard could bring something useful back also.  I don't see a trade of either as likely, but I expect they are looking at all options.  And if another team wanted Kornet or Vonleh to clinch a deal, so be it.

I think that the team is likely to want to move both Vonleh and Jackson, and will trade cash to do so.  I'm unsure if Brad would sacrifice yet another second rounder to dump them, though. 

I don't think that Brad wants to keep the dead weight on the roster, when better players are available in free agency.

I’m surprised Jackson wasn’t waived either. Kornet I think has shown enough to be worth even the luxury tax they are paying, especially if Timelord injures himself again.

Agree.  Keeping Kornet is a no brainer.  There’s still time to cut Jackson.

If we waive him, we're stuck paying tax on his salary to date.  If he's not cut by the deadline, it's likely we'll try to trade him.
