The refs have been downright garbage this year(even more than usual). And Tatum does tend to complain a lot but if we are being honest most of the time its warranted. Hes constantly getting beat up at the rim with no calls but other players initiate contact and get the benefit of a whistle almost every time. The dude is easily top 10 player right now and you could maybe argue top 5, he shouldnt be getting the Theis treatment.

Just think about the Techs hes gotten recently. They booted him out of that raptors game in montreal for no reason, they made a completely terrible call on Al(game 1 or 2?) and Tatum complained because it was obvious and received a Tech. So obvious that the NBA actually overturned the call after review so the fact that he complained was warranted due to the dog water call that ref made. Then last night he got a T for waving/slapping his thigh, whatever that motion is that EVERY NBA player makes when they dont agree with the call. But then 2 plays later Vucevic throws an even worse hissy fit in front of the refs and gets nothing. And then to make it even worse our favorite unbiased official Marc "Rondo's son" Davis calls 2 of the fastest techs on Coach Joe. All we want is some consistency. If we are throwing around techs like this then the Lebron and Draymonds and Doc Rivers of the league should be thrown out of every single game.

Again not saying im cool with him complaining especially when hes not getting back on defense to do so, but lets not act like hes complaining for no reason at all, most of the time hes right. He needs to be treated like the superstar that he is
everyone got so sensitive after 9-11... thanks alot bin laden

Grant Williams was ejected.

Joe Mazzulla was ejected.

Tatum got a technical.

Tatum and Williams were repeat offenders last year in terms of complaining to refs.  It can become a distraction.  Are the early technicals a concern going forward?

Yes it's terrible. People get emotional, my dad is one of those people who gets angry very easily but calms down very quickly as well. But when you're playing a game of basketball and you get a rep as someone who is a whiner then every team will be trying to bait you into getting ejected, and the refs will be on the lookout as well.

I'm less worried about Joe Mazz's tech, he definitely shouldn't have got one, Marc Davis was trying to be overprotective of the 2 female refs on his crew (Cheryl Flores and Natalie Sago) and he was very quick on the whistle, but Tatum did wave his arm in disgust at the whistle. Another player would probably have got a warning but as Eddie House said he has a rep for being a whiner and they probably T'd him up on that basis. Same with Gwill, he's probably an even bigger complainer than Tatum is, he's always arguing with officials. Now playing with emotion is great, if you're the type of player that that helps. Some players will try and pick a verbal fight on court to get themselves worked up, Larry Bird was great at it. But you can't get thrown out of the game. It has to be controlled aggression and controlled emotion.

Personally I don't get the whole arguing with officials thing. School, social basketball, I was always taught to play to the whistle and move on to the next play. Arguing won't get the referee to change his mind. Those are part of those "uncontrollables", you just have to deal with them. No matter how bad the referees are, just deal with it. Moaning about a bad call is pointless. Even worse when it starts to affect your game. I know people will say "but there's a game within the game and players like LeBum can get the officials to call things in their favor" well you have to be good at manipulation and it's clear these two are not. Because they have a rep with the officials as moaners and it's never good to have that kind of rep.

As fans, sure we can complain about the referees till the cows come home, that's what fans do. Complaining about referees from the comfort of our lounge room, throwing beer cans at the TV to try and hit Marc Davis and having the benefit of multiple replays to show how wrong he was is fun. But players have to focus on the game and it was clear they lost focus last game and ultimately it cost them.

Complaining TO the refs shows mental and/or emotional weakness.

Complaining ABOUT the refs shows intelligence because the refs are just terrible.

Remember all of the conspiracy theories from posters during our Finals run? I thought this place was infiltrated by Kyrie and Alex Jones. This place became Infowars.

I think the team did show a lack of composure.  The refs are going to be bad sometimes.  Professional athletes have to deal with that.  I think part of what we saw was the difference between Coach Udoka and Coach Mazzulla.  The difference between a 45 year old coach who has played in the NBA and a 34 year old coach who may or may not be ready to be a NBA coach.  Udoka was able to set a tone that put a damper on this sort of thing.  Mazzulla seemed to kind of fuel it.

The team and the coach need to learn from this.

To add to this, a coach can ride with a team that's winning a lot easier than with a team that's losing.  If the C's kept winning, we'd be feeling very good about the young coach.   Once a loss happens, the mindset begins to change.  Doubt, blame, negative emotion.  These are the challenges of being a coach -- how to respond to the thinking spurred by losing.  If the C's had won the game in Chicago there would be some frustration about the officiating, and issues to deal with in terms of responding to calls you disagree with, however, the win changes some of the thoughts, some of the mood, and everything feels more manageable.  It's how Joe guides his team through loss and adversity that will determine whether he's ready.  A lot to ask of a 34 year old IMO.

Hardly a conspiracy theory to say that the refs are many times incompetent, inconsistent, and vary calls based upon the player and situation. Any reasonable person would watch that Chicago game and identify at least a dozen clearly awful calls/non-calls (both ways) and a completely different standard for a technical foul for Chicago than Boston, evidenced by the Vucevic non-T compared to 5 or 6 for us. The fact that many times foul calls are varied based upon whether the shot goes in or not is enough evidence alone for this.

And I mean, when you have the NBA referee representative in Steve Javie say on a national broadcast (in the Finals no less) that the refs essentially do play favorites and absolutely bend the rules/selectively make or don’t make calls based on the situation, it’s by definition no longer “conspiracy” and in the realm of “fact”. It’s the extent to how much this happens that’s the real debate.

Some of the refs seem to have a real beef with the Celtics.    Other teams can complain and no techs, our guys look at the refs and they get a tech.

Instant replay consistently shows how poorly a job they do and the NBA always has their backs, no matter how back they get which is absurd.

In some ways if you play the other team is such a way that the refs can determine or influence the outcome then you have no played well enough.   But the NBA is insidious how they do by tying players hands with early fouls and evening it up at the end.    I would much rather see a robotic refs down the road, that were not influenced by personal bias or star power.

All fans want is an evenly called game for both teams.

GWill has been suspended for a game for his actions on Monday.

Quote
The Celtics will be without Grant Williams for Friday night’s game against the Cavaliers after the NBA suspended the forward one game for an incident in Monday night’s loss at Chicago.

The punishment is for “recklessly making contact with and directing inappropriate language toward a game official,” said NBA executive vice president/head of basketball operations Joe Dumars in a statement.

“After it is correctly judged a blocking foul on Williams, he jumps up and approaches official [Cheryl] Flores and makes intentional physical contact with her,” lead official Marc Davis said in the postgame pool report Monday night, “and he is ejected as per rule for this sportsmanship act.”

That will make our bigs rotation (assuming we consider him a semi-big semi-wing) even shorter.

Funny how guys like LeBron, Wade, Durant, etc. never get suspended for "directing inappropriate language toward a game official."

I know seniority shouldn't matter, but GWill might have a fair way to go before getting to the level of those guys in the eyes of the refs  :police:

That's really my point: Not all players are treated the same by officials, but they should be.
