In the first half last night, Vonleh looked terrible.  He didn’t produce, but worse, his defense was a turnstile.  It was hard for me to imagine any NBA big defending worse.  Worse than Kanter, worse than Jabari.

I only watched a few minutes of the second half.  I checked the box score, though, and Vonleh showed out like his name was Moses Brown.

Did his energy change?  Was it just playing against non-starters?  Did his defense noticeably improve?

He started off really out of position on defense. He got better as the game went on. The hornets were really trying to win this game. I think he needs reps. I think a lot of these guys will look better if they are intermingled with the starters or 6-8 guys. I think Brogdon will make any of these guys passable on offense but they need reps in the defensive schemes.

roy brings up good points, as ever. i only watched a little of the game, but early on vonleh was worse then jabari and freedom. (notice the updated name!) at least they tried and would chase after the attacker after he blew by them.

vonley was getting beat and then just watched the attacker go to the basket.

i will take everyone's word for it that he got better.

i think, also, that liam may have a good point as well. vonleh may have been just lost in the first half on a new defense. he had no idea where to be, how to switch, etc.

hopefully as he gets more reps that goes away. if vonleh can play okay defense (though i hope for more) then with his rebounding and put backs he will be a fine bench player.

though, secretly in my heart of hearts, i am still rooting for my binkie kabengele.  ;D
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

I missed the first quarter, but didn’t think he looked bad defensively for the 3Q I did watch. If Vonleh plays that way he did yesterday, he’s easily the best backup 5 for the C’s. Noah also gives Boston much needed size at 6’10/260lbs with a 7’4” wingspan.

I agree with all of that. His defensive mistakes in the 1st half seemed to be a carryover from the previous game, so it very well could be a matter of learning the defensive schemes. There was one play early on where he left Plumlee to cover the driver and the ball went right back to Plumlee for the stuff. He has to learn when to switch and when to stick with your man in the C's defensive scheme.

I agree with Liam’s assessment. Hopefully it’s just a matter of learning the sets. I remember how ragged last year’s Celtics team looked the first few games while Ime was making them switch everything. That ironed out just fine. Given that Vonleh isn’t a rookie I would’ve liked to see him start better but the coaching staff seems to think they’ve got something so I’m waiting and watching.
Vonleh is definitely smoother on offense that Kabengele, and that matters too.

I’m still waiting to see what Kornet does. I can see he’s got some important limitations that aren’t likely to go away- especially, he’s just not strong enough against the bigger bigs - but the team has been expressing confidence in him and I want to see if they’ve got good reason. He is very tall and he might move well enough to play solid drop coverage on D and operate as the roll man on the other end. A lot of people have decided he’s trade, but I remember a lot of comments to the same effect on Hauser, and so far he’s looked pretty good. People writing off D White and saying Grant wasn’t an NBA player after his bad 2d year. Hoping Kornet plays against Toronto.

@GwashburnGlobe
Mazzulla on Noah Vonleh, who responded from a tough first half with 14 points and 13 rebounds:

“I think he’s great; he understands the game, screens well, fits into our defensive identity. Very happy with the way he played. He did some good things for us.” #Celtics

I think he earned roster spot last night, particularly the way he played in 2nd half.  Early dumb offensive fouls didn't discourage him.

I think it is a strong indication of his status that the coaches put him out there with the "starters" (not exactly all the starters but with the core rotation players).  To me, that seemed like them testing him at the next level up from playing with the scrubs.  I did not see much of this game.  Just a little at the end.  The part I watched, Vonleh looked fine.

Sounds like everyone, including the head coach agreed that Vonleh was choppy in the first half.  I still like how he looks.  He is an NBA athlete.  Whether he has NBA BBIQ and competitiveness I guess is still to be seen.  If it was me, I would be trying to simplify the game for him.  Do these 3 or 4 things.  Don't try to do more than that.  It is what they did with Rob Williams.  Now RWill is expanding some but still stays within a fairly narrow bandwidth of things he tries to do.  Vonleh should learn from that.  Vonleh is probably as good an athlete as RWill but has not shown the same BBIQ and competitiveness so far.

Vonleh is an NBA athlete but TIMELORD is a total physical freak.

Well, that the whole crux of the issue.  Guys don't stick in the league or don't get minutes BECAUSE they can't play consistently.

Yeah, I’m not sure there is another Center in the league with Rob’s athletic skillset. He’s an anomaly.

His offense seems fine. His defense needs work. Still belongs in the league so if he doesn't stick here someone will sign him. It was a good choice coming here for camp either way.

@celtics

As the NBA's preseason leader in rebounds and field-goal percentage, North Shore native Noah Vonleh is making the most of his opportunity with the hometown team.

I am not sure what this means exactly.  I guess it means that the Celtics are happy with what Vonleh has done so far?  I have been pretty happy with what I have seen from him.  I hope he realizes that he needs to make the most of this opportunity.  He could be running out of NBA real estate.

I would like to see a little more intensity out of him.  I know some players aren't all rah rah and I guess Vonleh is just more laid back but I don't see the intensity you expect to see.  When I see him play, I wonder if he loves basketball.

Even the version he has been so far through preseason is a player who can help us, especially with RWill out.  I sense there is more there though, if you could just figure out how to unlock it.
