Don’t know if anyone else found the time to watch Yam in Eurobasket, but he’s definitely got legit NBA talent.  I have no idea why his coach barely played him their first game (7 minutes, and I don’t remember seeing him in the second half), but his last four games he averaged 16.5/1.8/3.8 with ridiculous shooting splits of 61/55/90, and a near 2:1 assist-turnover ratio, that would have been a lot better if his teammates could actually finish some of the easy looks he gave them.

His defense was solid too — he was very aggressive on ball, but not in a way that got him into foul trouble, and he did reasonably well at ball-denial when he got switched onto bigs that weren’t named Jokic.  I’m not sure what his future is in Boston with Smart, Brogdon, and White here, but I do think he’d be at least as good as Pritchard when he comes over.

He was pretty overwhelmed in summer league in 2021, while Pritchard was a stud. Hard to believe he is now at same level. I doubt that.

He was 20 when you saw him in summer league, while Pritchard was 23 on the same team.  I didn’t say he’s as good now, I said I think he’ll be as good when he comes over, which will be next year at the earliest, when he’ll be 22 going on 23, and more likely the following season.

He looked a lot less overwhelmed against better competition the last week than he did that week in Vegas.

I think Pritchard is just a different level of player. He’s an elite shooter for starters. I doubt Yam will ever make our roster. The talent gap between him and Pritchard is far more stark than their age gap.

Yam is also an elite shooter.  And that age gap is huge, especially when you’re trying to compare what you saw from a 23 year old who’d had a season in the NBA to what you saw from a 20 year old who’d been in the country for about two weeks.

I have Pritchard and JD Davison ahead of him in depth chart.

It’s a safer bet that he won’t play an NBA minute than he will, but I won’t commit to hat-eating.

Isn't Yam just another of Danny Ainge's undersized guards?

Yam is 3 years younger than Pritchard.  Pritchard was a pretty solid rookie 2 years ago.  That mean Yam would have to make the team next summer and play as well as Pritchard did in 2020.  It is possible but certainly not a given.

I think Yam will stay overseas an extra year because he’s under contract through next season and the Celtics have a bit of a crunch at his position, so there will be a delay by a year for his arrival.  As a rookie there may be more ups and downs than Pritchard had in year 2 (although Pritchard had plenty of ups and downs last year so maybe not), because transition to the NBA is hard.  But year 2 Yam at age 25 will be better than what we get from Pritchard this year at age 25.  That’s my prediction.
