I had said that the playoffs was a reasonable stretch goal for the team.  They were right there until the very end.  Overall though, the team played worse than I thought they would, it is just that a lot of other teams played bad too.  They were the team that found ways to lose games.

I am still bullish on the team though.  I think they can improve the OL with draft picks and maybe signings.  They will lose a few players, pick up a few players, hopefully some younger players continue to develop.  I think the bones of a good team are there.

A surprising weakness was punter.  Jake Bailey being injured ended up being a big issue for us.  We lost like 15 yards it seemed on every punt exchange.  That is tough on a team that is needing to win with defense.

The punter was pretty awful.  I refused to even commit his name to memory, hoping they would find another guy off the scrap heap.

They definitely could have won a few more games pretty easily, but they lacked consistency and killer instinct/discipline.

I was at that Raiders game and will never forget the awfulness of the last 3 minutes.  Not just the last play.  They have several chances to make a game winning play and failed at every turn.  Even the Miami win last week…They had several opportunities to seal the deal and couldn’t do it until they recovered the on side kick.

I liked how they played yesterday for the most part.  Buffalo is just way better than they are.  Josh Allen is a ton of fun and I’ll be rooting for them.

It is true in my opinion that the primary difference between Buffalo and us is the difference between Josh Allen and Mac Jones.  Yeah, they have Diggs who is better than any of our receivers but that is a much smaller difference in terms of team impact.  Of course in yesterday's game, Special Teams was a huge difference but I see that as easily fixed.

I believe that Mac Jones will improve, there is some ceiling there, but he is never going to Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes.  Neither are most other QBs.  Getting better OL play will help Jones but his pocket awareness and knowing when to step up or otherwise adjust is still a weakness and needs to improve.  Jones is not going to be Josh Allen or Mahomes but maybe he can be Joe Flacco or Jimmy Garoppolo.

Following the New England Patriots’ season-ending loss in Buffalo on Sunday, team owners Robert and Jonathan Kraft sent a letter to the club’s season-ticket holders. As part of it he promised a “critical evaluation” of the football operations.

Unfortunately, our season ended sooner than we hoped yesterday afternoon in Buffalo. While we always want to be playing games with playoff implications in Week 18, our expectation was to perform better throughout the season and to advance through the playoffs. We can assure you that no one in our organization is satisfied with the results from this past season

In the weeks ahead, we will be making critical evaluations of all elements of our football operation as we strive to improve and return to the playoffs next year.

When we welcome you back for the 2023 season, we anticipate presenting you with an improved product on the field, as well as many exciting new features and additions to Gillette Stadium. You have helped create a dominant home-field advantage over the past 20 years and we look forward to creating many more memorable moments in the years ahead.

It's great to hear this. The Krafts are amazing owners. That said, we need to actually see it to believe it. Hire an actual OC, maybe 1-2 more coaches from the outside with more experience/newer perspectives, and re-assign guys if needed (like Joe Judge back to Special Teams where he's great). And obviously add to the roster (O-Line, an alpha receiver, tall CB)

This is what I hope happens…

1) Bring back Bill O’Brien, fire or demote Patricia/Judge.

2) Trade for Brandin Cooks. He’s 29 and didn’t have a great year since Houston sucks. A 2nd round pick or a 3rd and a 5th could be enough compensation for the rebuilding Texans. Cooks has the 4.3 speed needed to stretch the field and he’s proven that he can play well in NE. I think Myers is gone in Free Agency. He’s the best FA WR available and I feel like someone will overpay.  Pats 2023 WR corp: Cooks, Parker, Bourne, Thorton. (Agholor should be gone.)

3) Draft the best O-lineman and DB available with the first two picks in the draft. Those areas need a serious talent influx.

4) Continue to Upgrade the O-line and secondary in free agency. Pats have a little over $50M in cap space to work with.

5) Overhaul special teams, starting with the ST coach.

Offseason should focus on fixing the offense:

1. Find offensive coordinator to work with Jones
2. Fix the offensive line via draft/FA
3. Get Jones impact WR

They need to do everything they can to maximize Jones’ ability. If they give him a good offensive coach, offensive line, and WRs and he flops next year, then you know you need to move on.

Krafts email to season ticket holders sounded like he's very unhappy.

Hopefully, making "critical evaluation of all elements" include firing Matty P, Cam Achord, Joe Judge, and losing Bryant, Smith, and Agholor.

And give Belichick the ultimatum next season...hey, gotta do it my way or the highway.

TCU has a big WR Quentin Johnston that is considered to be a 1st rounder and potentially there at 14. CB Joey Porter Jr also looks good at that spot.

Don't get your hopes up.  First round pick is going to be an OT that no one has heard of.  WRs and CBs will be taken in the 2nd or 3rd rounds.

Yeah, ASU had one of those a few years back. Was supposed to be good for blocking…Think I’m all set with Bill trying to draft WR’s. Should just trade for one at this point.

Yeah, Bill should just give up trying to draft a good receiver and make a trade for a known quantity.

This would be absolutely ridiculous. Bill made the Patriots - he may not have the same success in the future that he previously has, but there is no excuse not to let him coach for for however long he wants to. Bill has earned that, even if he needs a little nudging to upgrade staff/personnel.

He’s earned a long leash, but at the same time, the Pats haven’t advanced past the first round of the playoffs in 4 years. They’ve been a .500 team since Brady left. If that trend continues next year, Kraft will have some difficult decisions to make.
