According to The Athletic's Jared Weiss, Williams had the opportunity to cash in on a contract extension but turned it down.

"Williams' representatives and the team discussed an extension before the season that could have reached the low-$50 million range over four seasons but could not agree on the guarantee structure, league sources with knowledge of the negotiations said," Weiss stated.

Weiss further explained how Williams' overconfidence might come back to bite him, stating, "When the season began, Williams had turned down an extension offer and was flexing his newfound ability to attack closeouts with creativity. But things have gone south since, coincidentally timed with a report Williams is seeking up to $20 million annually, per Marc Stein."

I could see Grant being part of a sign and trade in the off-season but I don't see him leaving as a straight FA/RFA loss. If the Cs got a sign and trade from NO that included Hayes or Herb Jones. I think the Cs would have to listen

I want Grant to succeed. I hope he helps us down the stretch and in the postseason just like last season (ex. Game 7 vs. MIL), but he looks mentally worn down and also, apparently he's dealing with a lingering injury. If you ask me, maybe they should give him a few games off for "personal reasons" (like Jaylen recently) because him being out there just isn't helping anyone right now

We have seen good and bad Grant this season.  I think the "steady state" Grant or median Grant is something closer to the Good Grant that we saw at the beginning of the season.  I believe there is something physically wrong that is impacting him lately (they talk about his elbow).  I still don't think even Good Grant is worth $20M per though.  If he was offered $12M-$13M ish for 4 years, that sounds like a fair offer to me.  That is 10% or so above the standard MLE (non-taxpayer).  I will be surprised if he gets offered much more than that (and I am often surprise when it comes to player contracts so we shall see).

That MLE value is a real threshold or barrier.  Many teams can offer that, but to go above that, other teams would need to use real cap space.  He may not even get an offer that beats the $12.5M or so that the Celtics are reported to have offered.  Worst case, he will probably be close to this though so I understand him wanting to test the market, have some options.

Guess Grant didn’t learn from what Dennis Schroder went through when he decided not to take the money. Antics at the FT line isn’t going to help Grant either. He made himself look real foolish.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

Feels like the same exact route Smart took. Turned down a fair contract offer, bet on himself and failed miserably. Going to assume he’s not going to get anywhere close to what he was initially looking for.

For Smart, Cs basically ended up giving him his original offer when no one else ponied up in FA. Wonder if they do the same with Grant if he ends up in the $12 mil range.

Smart is/was a much better player than Grant, though. I don’t think they should give Grant the kind of money that was reportedly offered unless he really turns things up now and through the playoffs. He’s an MLE guy right now.

Oh come on.  Guys trash-talking at the free throw line happens every pretty much every time someone is shooting them.  Those weren’t “antics”.   I know you hate Grant, but that’s over the top.

He seems to be putting more effort into “talking” than playing this year. Whether he’s trash talking other players or complaining to officials. I think his own teammates are getting sick of it based on some of their reactions. Joe, too.

I don’t hate Grant, just don’t like how he’s been acting and playing this year. Needs to grow up.

I agree with your train of thought but taking into consideration That the cap will go up over the next few years, I’d expect the MLE to increase as well so I don’t think $12 mil is outlandish. It’s much more in line than $15-20 mil for a role player of his type.

I reckon Grant is grand. He stands a very good shot at getting an offer in that $50mil range in the summer if not greater. Good risk to take in my estimation.

And if he plays well in the playoffs again this season as he did last season he stands a very good chance at doing much better than that $50m offer. Anywhere from the $60-80m offer. That cap increase is going in at a good time for him to cash in this summer.

The $50m Boston offered is a good offer for the old cap; not the new cap.

He has worked himself into 7 to 10 at best. He should have taken the offer at this rate.

His play has fallen pretty far from his peak - something is shaking his confidence. We’d all better hope he finds himself again. The team is a lot better when he plays well.
