not surprised Vonleh made the team.  a bit surprised about Jackson though

I thought Jackson looked decent in 3 out of 4 preseason games. Feel like he did enough to earn the last spot.

First game- 9 mins of play: 5pts, 2rebs, 1ast, 3-5 from the field, 1-3 from 3pt

Second game- Bad

Third game- 23 mins of play: 16pts, 4rebs, 1ast, 6-14 from the field, 4-8 from 3pt

Fourth game- 8 mins of play: 5pts, 2rebs, 2ast, 2-3 from the field, 1-3 from 3pt.

I didn’t think Jackson looked good in game 1, numbers aside.

Wing was a position of need.   I am just not sure he was the wing we need.

It would appear that they signed him for pulling off the impossible. 5 points on 3-5 shooting in game 1.  ;)

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

nothing about his play stood out.  of the players that were cut, he did look better than them but that's a really low bar

Agreed. Maybe he's a cheap option compared to a vet off the scrap heap.

So right now, this is what we have to start the season:

Smart        White          Davison (2W)
Brown        Brogdon      Pritchard
Tatum        Hauser        Jackson
Gwilliams   Griffin          Kabengele (2W)
Horford      Vonleh         Kornet

Inactive:  RWill, Gallinari

We can start the season with up to 15 active so I think one or both 2-way players can actually be dressed and active for the start of the season.  Once RWill comes back, likely Kabengele goes to Portland (until someone else is injured).  But I expect that for opening night, both Davison and Kabengele will be on the bench and active.

I don't think the fact that Jackson is still with the team indicates anything more than that they don't have anyone else better that is ready to sign right now.  And Kornet's contract is about as unguaranteed as it can be so he is easily waived.  Harkless hasn't signed.  Favors is still clearing waivers.    There may be other cuts (I believe the roster deadline is Monday).  Kornet and Jackson are likely not still assured of being on the opening day roster.  But they are down 15 and ready for the deadline.

I imagine that's what they see Vonleh as. He's certainly got the potential to fill that roll.

Whiteside always puts up giant numbers and seems hated everywhere he goes. 4 teams in 4 years and currently unsigned? Doesn't sound like a guy I want in the locker room.

Favors I like. Probably have to dump Kornet to get him which... is probably worth it.

What might be going on with Derrick Favors?  No whispers of any teams looking at him?

Could his agent be negotiating with some teams now and it will be a surprise signing in a matter of days?

Or could he go weeks without signing somewhere, just waiting perhaps for a team to have an injured player that needs replacing?

Good question.  I think there are several FAs out there that could help a contender or the Celtics specifically:

Favors
Whiteside
Harkless
Stephenson

Stephenson and Whiteside have baggage issues but have played fairly well recently.  I can understand the Celtics would have some hesitancy with these two. Favors and Harkless don't have any character or locker room issues with them that I know of.  The roles the Celtics can offer are somewhat limited but it does not seem any of these guys are getting better offers.

As you say though, Favors in particular seems like he could be on a team already if he wanted to be on a team.  No one really can offer more than a vet min contract at this point so it is not like they are going to get more money by waiting.  Maybe they think that if they wait for a team to have a serious injury, that they can then go to that team and have a bigger role.  The Celtics already have serious injuries though.  I guess if a player with a big contact has a season ending injury, that team could get a DPE and be able to offer more.   But does it really make sense to wait for something like that which may not even happen?
