What's the story with Stauskas?  I thought he could step in for some bench minutes.

He decided it was more lucrative to make YouTube videos of him shooting threes in the rain at his own outdoor court

The actual story is the Celtics guaranteed his salary so they could include him in the Brogdon trade, so he’s with Indiana now.

Unless the Celtics sign or trade for another wing (i.e. Eric Paschal or Justice Winslow types) you can put your money on Hauser to easily win the MIP award. He'll get a shot at 15-20 mpg. Not only that but he'll get plenty of playing time on those back to backs where either Tatum and/or Brown sit out (or those load management games). He can certainly shoot the ball as good as anyone on the team. It's how his defense holds up will have a say in the amount of minutes he earns. But if he shoots over 40% from 3 how can you NOT play him? Good examples mentioned were Straus and Duncan Robinson but also players like Joe Harris, Seth Curry and Joe Ingles (or even the highly drafted players like Kennard) carved out nice careers buy being consistent 3 point threats. It took some of them a few years but they became a threat that you can't leave open. So there is a spot on ANY team if you can shoot at a .400+ clip. This guy Hauser has that skill and the Celtics are in serious need for such a shooter (even with Gallinari on board who is signed for one season).

As far as Nesmith goes, (as been reported that he shoots lights out at practice/scrimmages but doesn't relate to actual games) he's going to be a nice surprise for the Pacers this coming season, dropping double-figures ppg. I will take any bets on the above two propositions.

Could be interesting to leave a few backup spots behind the Jays as a development spots. Having Hauser, Ryan, and Begrain get minutes based on matchup. I could get behind that because how many minutes will they actually play? They will certainly be outside the top 10 rotation for sure unless they make a big leap. In which case, great.

According to a league source, the Celtics and forward Sam Hauser have agreed to a three-year deal worth approximately $6 million. The first two years are fully guaranteed. Cs are hopeful Hauser can be a real contributor next season. bostonglobe.co

Internally, there’s real optimism that Hauser can become a regular rotation player for the Celtics next season. The 6-foot-8 forward is expected to join Boston’s Las Vegas summer league roster this week."

“First and foremost, the shooting stands out,” Celtics coach Ime Udoka said in April. “Elite shooter…But he’s a very cerebral player across the board. He’s fit in well in games that he’s played early in the season when guys were injured. He plugged right in and he didn’t really miss a beat as far as, defensively, and some of the things we were looking for. So, always in the right spot, great team defender and knows how to use himself, his angles and a cerebral guy, not just offensively but defensively as well.”

After re-signing Hauser, Boston will still have three empty roster spots, with rookie second-round draft pick JD Davison a strong candidate to fill one.

Sudden Sam will be our 8th man next season.  Great size and a solid shooter from 3 land.

Modify....maybe 9th or 10th now that I think about it a little more.

Good for him.

I don't see how he's part of the regular rotation next season but he'll get some run filling in for injured players and if his shooting holds, he's got good size. He's not as big as Gallo, but that's not a bad guy for Hauser to emulate.

My bet is there’s a team option for year 3.  This would make him an RFA again, with the C’s having full Bird rights.

Hope I’m wrong but I’m skeptical he has the athleticism to play any meaningful minutes.

That’s where I was middle of last year. I’m a little more optimistic now; he went in for short non-garbage-time minutes a couple times last year and moved a lot better than I expected. Stayed in front of his man, and he’s too big to just go over or though. I’m under no illusions that he’s going to start, but I think rotation minutes at some point over the next couple years are still a possible outcome.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism

Wait, what? Tatum, Brown, Smart, TL, Horford, Brogdon, White, Grant, Gallo, PP are top 10 for sure. Then we are likely to pick up a better big than our mascot Kornet. So, Hauser is probably at best 12th on the depth chart right now. He has the potential to improve, but we certainly aren't expecting a lot out of him. He is getting paid less than the vet min.

I think it’s possible Hauser could get ahead of Pritchard as the 10th man, but barring injury, that’s about his ceiling next season.

My thoughts on Hauser: we had a similar player in Max Strus who we let go and it came back to haunt us. Stevens learned from that mistake.
