Wiggins, 4 year 109 million extension. Less than Poole. Ha ha.

Poole turned 23 in June, Wiggins will be 28 in Feb. Guess they feel like Jordan has more upside at this point. What do you think Poole’s ceiling might be, like a CJ McCollum?
Poole strikes more as an instant offense guy off the bench.  More like Lou Williams or Jamal Crawford.  I think they significantly overpaid him.  Wiggins is a much better player.

I agree that’s what Poole is now, as he is giving the Warriors 18ppg off the bench. Do you think there’s much room for him to get better considering he’s only 23? Tyler Herro is in a similar situation.

Both Poole and Herro are curious contracts.  I am not sure that Poole continues to put up 18'ish points moving forward.  Thompson is back now.  Poole won't start or get as many minutes.  Clearly the GSW think he is good.  And Miami likes Herro.  We are paying our 6th man (Brogdon) $22.M moving forward vs. Herro and Poole at $27M/$31M starting next season.  I guess that is the going rate for a starter level 6th man guard.

Look what happened with Duncan Robinson though.  Big contract to keep your guy, now it is a bad contract taking up space.  I guess so long as you are able to keep resigning your players, the cap doesn't matter so much, or having a few overpriced players.  But in the long run, teams with bad contracts tend to get weighed down by them.  Don't know if that will be the case with Poole and Herro, if they keep scoring 20 pts, all is good I guess.

The Celtics of course are dealing with the same thing with Grant Williams.  Grant isn't going to give you 20 pts off the bench like Poole and Herro can but he does plenty of other things.  They are probably offering half or less as compared to what Herro and Poole got.  Then you look at PHO and they let Ayton become a RFA and just matched to keep their guy.  And Ayton is a clear starter.

I don’t think the plan for both Poole and Hero is for them to be a 6th man long term. Believe Herro might be starting this year and Poole likely will be the replacement for Klay who has lost a step and is a FA after next season. I think both Poole and Herro are significantly better than Duncan Robinson. Grant Williams isn’t close to their caliber.

These are my thoughts exactly. Klay will not be starting after next season when he is 34 or 35.

Not sure I understand.  Is this basically a 1 year deal with 3 years of team options?  This is a pretty team friendly deal, especially if there is no player protection against injury.  It is one thing if he doesn't play well and they don't pick up the next year but what if he gets injured?  There has to be something in the contract to address injury.

Spotrac lists the following years as "non-guaranteed".  That could be different than "not fully guaranteed".  Details will follow I guess.

Keith Smith: Something is off with the reporting around KPJ’s deal. One report says Year 1 is $15.86M gtd, but that the total is $82.5M. That’s not possible. $15.86M would max out at ~$71M. Another report says Year 1 is fully guaranteed. Either Year 1 is off or total has incentives in it. – via Twitter KeithSmithNBA

Obviously there's some confusion about this deal, but it could work a number of ways, but all hinging on the non-guaranteed rules.  For salary owed beyond the first year, there is either a single date or a series of dates by which he could be released without the rest of the contract being owed.  We see this most commonly with rookie deals for second round picks, where often the first year is guaranteed, but years 2-4 are either non-guaranteed or partially guaranteed.  Most times the guarantee dates are timed around the beginning of free agency (June 30, July 1st, maybe July 10-15 sometimes) so that a released player can get a new deal if his contract isn't picked up.  Sometimes there are weirder dates -- I remember a few years ago someone had a weird guarantee for the following season in early April, so the team had to decide heading into the playoffs whether to keep him on the roster and also owe him money for next year, or to let him go and save on next year's payroll.  I don't remember what they chose.  Typically for larger multi-year deals the non-guaranteed years guarantee before every season, but technically they could have a single guarantee date for all three of the final years, or multiple guarantee dates within each season.  For example, Luke Kornet was guaranteed at $300k in August, half his salary tomorrow, and the full amount in early January.  They could do something like this every season.  Alternatively, year 1 could be fully guaranteed, and years 2-4 all guarantee at once on July 1, 2024, making the deal essentially a 1-year deal with a 3-year team option.

ESPN says there are mechanisms that would fully guarantee the contract, so it sounds like the incentives are more about guaranteeing parts of the contract than increasing it.

Porter is a guy I really wanted to take a flyer on.  Such a mess off the court, but an immense talent, given he would have cost almost nothing to bring in, I thought it was worth a shot.  That was during the .500 season as well, so it wouldn't have done anything to a good team even if it was a disaster.  Glad to see him seemingly turn his life around.

Nasir Little is extending with the Blazers for 4 years, $28 million.  Pretty rare to see a rookie extension below the MLE.

Sounds like a bad culture in that Charlotte locker room.  That's at least the third arrest this off-season (although the other two are now gone).

4 years, 95 million for Hunter.  Seems like an overpay for the Hawks.

Maybe, but that’s not a guy you want to lose. He has good size for a wing at 6’8”/220lbs. Long arms and athletic. Shot the 3 ball at 38% last season. Solid two way player and he fits in nicely with Young/Murray. Hawks could be tough this year.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

It’s contracts like that which makes guys like GWill over value themselves. Hopefully we get to keep him in a more manageable contract come next year.

If he can get his 2PT % back up to the mid 50s he'll be a very good player.
