Barry. Really disliked it. I think it delivers on a comedic level (NoHo Hank is HILARIOUS), but the plot is so rushed (as are many shows now a days to cater to the modern attention span), and the big moments don't feel earned whatsoever. Sally is also one of the most irritating characters I've ever seen put on screen.

I needed something to fill the Better Call Saul hole I now have in my heart, and I was hopeful for Barry since pretty much everyone in my life was recommending it to me, but I pretty much don't like anything about it ... except NoHo Hank lol.

^I have some serious issues with Rings of Power. The timeline is a complete disaster, with things from mid 2A occurring before things that are early 2A, Galadriel is really poorly written, there has been nothing about the rings of power themselves (which could have been really well handled with the Lord of Gifts persona), I really dislike what they've done with Numenoreans, and more.

If it wasn't the IP that it is, it'd probably be a 6.5/10 for me. But with being a Tolkien tragic, the deviation from the very well-established law is just killing me. 4/10. That being said, the complaints about minority casting really bother me. Has absolutely no place (cannot believe it needs to be said!). I wish they went all in on bearded dwarven women though.

Will have a look at HoD though. Winds of Winter will come one day!

It's funny, I read A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings and A Storm of Swords in 2000 (when I was in your country no less, I still remember buying them at the Dymocks in Sydney). Then I waited 5 years (felt like forever) for a Feast for Crows in 2005 (I had returned to Boston by then). Then I waited 6 years (felt even longer than forever) for a Dance with Dragons in 2011. Then the wait for The Winds of Winter is now 11 years and counting. And the major plot points and endings have been spoiled by the GOT series which is a major buzzkill.

I feel like GRRM just wrote himself into a corner and can't figure out how to wrap up all the myriad labyrinthine plot threads. That and he's a terrible procrastinator, every time I read about him he's doing anything but writing. He does like a paragraph a year, at that rate we should have it out in 2050  :-\
Any odd typos are because I suck at typing on an iPhone :D

GRRM has so many lucrative side gigs going that I seriously doubt he ever finishes the books. And that's disappointing since, like you, I started reading the books long ago(1998) and had to wait years between books.

I am in the same boat with Patrick Rothfuss and The Kingkiller Chronicle. He wrote two wildly popular books of a supposed trilogy and hasn't done anything in 10 years to finish the story. Why? He is making millions playing Dungeons and Dragons on Twitch.

Curious, how many episodes did you watch? Think the first season is a bit slow until episodes 7 and 8, which are incredible. Takes a little while to get into it, but I thought the show was a really well made dark comedy. Sally is super annoying, but she’s supposed to be. Barry, Noho Frank, Gene, and Monroe are all great characters, IMO.

I think the show I look forward to the most on a weekly basis is City on a Hill.  Kevin Bacon is just so charismatic in it, and completely immerses himself in his character.  Outside of his acting the show would probably be nothing special, but I find it quite entertaining to watch an actor work his craft.

I finished season 5 of Cobra Kai.  If you like the other seasons, you'll like this one.  It's campy, heavy on nostalgia, and is essentially a soap opera.  That all works for me.

I'm watching The Patient on Hulu.  I'm only three episodes in, but it's pretty good so far.  I was hoping for amazing, and it doesn't reach that bar, but it's good.

As somebody who is only somewhat familiar with Tolkien lore, the failure to adhere to a timeline doesn't bother me as much as a viewer.  I have more of a problem with the lack of a narrative focus.  I feel like the series jumps from set piece to set piece, with a lot of inconsequential filler in between.  The series hasn't done a great job explaining to the viewer why any of these characters matter, or who is important vs. tangential.

My wife and I are watching (for the third time) New Girl, which is hilarious.

Just got through binging the latest season.

I can't believe how much they can milk out of those 3 Karate Kid movies.  After each of the last 3 seasons, I figured they were pretty much out of material, but they keep finding new ways to reference back to the originals.  (Which is amazing, since I don't remember any of the Karate Kid movies airing on TV after the very early 90's).

I love it though, very entertaining.  Also seemed liked less teen drama this season, which was a positive since I'm here for the nostalgia and campiness.

Keep waiting for a Hilary Swank cameo though.

I think the best way to describe New Girl is like a quirky Friends.  One of the best sitcoms of the 2010 decade, IMO.  A few years ago, I told my wife I was going to start working my way through it, asking if she had any interest in watching it with me or if should do it solo.  She had never seen it, and had no interest in starting it.  But she caught bits and pieces while I was watching it, and was quickly hooked too.  (Same thing happened to us with Malcolm in the Middle and Parks & Rec, wife had no interest but got drawn in and hooked from me watching it).

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

I made it to the episode with the karate father and daughter - which is halfway through season 2, I believe - hated it, and through in the towel.

Interesting episode of HotD last night.  Advice:  go with common law marriage in Westeros, or at least elope.

Gotcha. Well, you gave it a fair shot. I can see the show not being for everyone.

Yeah, it's definitely quirky—I think that's a direct result of Zooey Deschanel being the main driver of the show. We love all of the main characters, but especially Schmidt. We built this Schmidty on Tootsie Rolls!
